Q&A: Should the government legislate the size and shape of a hot dog?
Question by The Fed Up Matthew™: Should the government legislate the size and shape of a hot dog?
Yes this is a serious question believe it or not.

Pediatricians call for a choke-proof hot dog
Nutritionists have long warned of the perils of hot dogs: fat, sodium and preservatives to name a few.
Now, the American Academy of Pediatrics wants foods like hot dogs to come with a warning label — not because of their nutritional risks but because they pose a choking hazard to babies and children.
Better yet, the academy would like to see foods such as hot dogs “redesigned” so their size, shape and texture make them less likely to lodge in a youngster’s throat. More than 10,000 children under 14 go to the emergency room each year after choking on food, and up to 77 die, says the new policy statement, published online today in Pediatrics. About 17% of food-related asphyxiations are caused by hot dogs.
“If you were to take the best engineers in the world and try to design the perfect plug for a child’s airway, it would be a hot dog,” says statement author Gary Smith, director of the Center for Injury Research and Policy at Nationwide Children’s Hospital in Columbus, Ohio. “I’m a pediatric emergency doctor, and to try to get them out once they’re wedged in, it’s almost impossible.”
The Consumer Product Safety Commission requires labels on toys with small parts alerting people not to give them to kids under 3. Yet there are no required warnings on food, though more than half of non-fatal choking episodes involve food, Smith says.
“No parents can watch all of their kids 100% of the time,” Smith says. “The best way to protect kids is to design these risks out of existence.”
Though Smith says he doesn’t know exactly how someone would redesign a hot dog, he’s certain that some savvy inventor will find a way.
Janet Riley, president of the National Hot Dog & Sausage Council, supports the academy’s call to better educate parents and caregivers about choking prevention. “Ensuring the safety of the foods we service to children is critically important for us,” Riley says.
But Riley questions whether warning labels are needed. She notes that more than half of hot dogs sold in stores already have choking-prevention tips on their packages, advising parents to cut them into small pieces. “As a mother who has fed toddlers cylindrical foods like grapes, bananas, hot dogs and carrots, I ‘redesigned’ them in my kitchen by cutting them with a paring knife until my children were old enough to manage on their own,” Riley says.
The Food and Drug Administration, which has authority to recall products it considers “unfit for food,” plans to review the new statement, spokeswoman Rita Chappelle says.
Given the health risks of obesity, pediatrician Alan Greene, author of Feeding Baby Green, says, “The last thing we need is to redesign candy and junk food with cool shapes, so we can give them to kids even younger.”

What features would you want from a lighting design?
Question by Ewen: What features would you want from a lighting design?
If you work in an office environment (or can imagine working in an office environment!), what would you want from the lighting that you use on a daily basis? This could be in the form of mechanical features, or simply what kind of artificial light source you want.
Please take time to answer this question. I would really like all your thoughts, even if you think they may sound stupid. Any input is valuable to me.
Cheers

Dimmers are always a nice feature to have 🙂
Or you can go with those artificial sunlight lights. Those supposedly keep peoples moods a little more elevated…(which especially in a cubical setting could be a great thing)
Just no florescent lighting!!! That will drive people insane!

HP Pavilion DM4 Notebook – Power Button Design Flaw!
HP Pavilion DM4 — Amazing!!! Major design flaw! Power button does not sit flush, so you can turn the power button on and off by exerting pressure on the outside of? the computer lid right above where the power button sits. This may be a major design flaw in the laptop. My computer turns on and off when I carry it in my backpack… Still waiting to hear back from HP on how they plan on fixing this issue, which may be a design issue and not simply isolated to one computer.

2nd reason I dislike Apple & the Mac : The UI is IMHO wrong. In many ways it has not gotten over its basic design flaws that go all the way back to 1984. And until recently Windows was staying true to its 1985 UI roots. Linux has surpassed both in this area , and unlike both Windows & Mac OS X, it lets its user choose which base UI design they want to use.

Are those Airplane designing engineers that stupid?
Question by wo: Are those Airplane designing engineers that stupid?
* Events of Airplane accidents involving birds are so common.
* I believe the designing Engineers are so stupid not to realize that suitable grills/metal nets are so important to be provided to the engine’s front, so to prevent various type of birds from filtering through causing plane damages or crashes.
* This solution is the simplest thing comes on any sound minded person.
*** If grill fitting is not the solution (which I don’t believe! ) then please explain why?
Best answer:
Answer by Sparky
to make a grille small enough to keep out birds, it would reduce the efficiency of the engine so much it would not be economical to fly the plane. by reducing the airflow into the engine with such a grille, the engine would have to be much larger to obtain the same thrust.

The Accident
It happened on the Midland Railway track between Derby and Chesterfield, on a dark and foggy night of 26 September 1860. With visibility only about 10 yards, the train was proceeding north at only 14 mph. It was a long train, with 27 wagons loaded with salt, two loaded goods vans, engine, tender and brake van. The heavy load was causing some slippage on the rail. Half a mile beyond Ambergate station, the driver suddenly noticed that his rear wheels were no longer on the rails. He shut off steam, stopped the engine and went to investigate. His tender was attached to only two wagons, and they were all off the rails too. There were two more wagons about 10 yards behind, close to Bull bridge, a small viaduct over a local road. The next nine wagons behind were piled in a heap about 25 feet high from the bottom of the road, reaching up to the telegraph wires by the side of the track. The guard in the brake van had been thrown head first against the front panel when the accident occurred, but was not seriously hurt. All the wagons behind the bridge were still on the line.
Investigation
Section of broken girder
When examined by the driver and fireman, they found that one of the cast iron girders had fractured, unusually near to one of the abutments, rather than at the centre of the beam. The track was supported by a pair of identical girders with Barlow rails cut to length laid across the inner flange, with asphalted ballast on top, just below the sleepers. When Captain Henry Whatley Tyler of the Railway Inspectorate examined the fracture surface, he found it rusted over, but the evidence of those who had seen it first, showed just what had happened. The cast iron girder had broken vertically from an enormous defect in the web and flanges, where there was a complete gap between the sides. The girder was completely defective here, but why no one had spotted it before the accident remains a mystery. Tyler suggests that it may have grown from an internal void with time, simply because such a defect would surely have been discovered either by the foundry or the builders. The girder had been installed 23 years before, in 1837, and should have supported a central load of 90 tons if in good condition. The pair of girders should have supported a total load of 360 tons distributed over all the structure, and Tyler stated that the girder was much bigger than was needed for the job. The engine weighed 31 tons and the tender 18 tons. The source of the defect remains unknown, but may have been caused initially by a “cold shut”, where the molten metal does not fuse together during metal casting. It often occurs when two waves of fast cooling cast iron meet, but why it should have occurred only about 10 feet from one end remains unknown. It could have grown with repeated loading from passing traffic, and Tyler thought it lucky that it had failed when a goods train was passing, rather than a passenger train, when casualties would have been inevitable. So it is possible that fatigue had caused the failure by steady growth of a brittle crack from the initial defect.
Implications
Together with the Wooton bridge collapse next year in 1861, there should have been some concern within the railway companies about the number of cast iron girders used as under-bridges on railway lines. Engineers would also have been aware of the problems of cast-iron in railway bridges after the failure of the Dee bridge in 1847. Whether or not such structures were inspected is unknown. Later events seem to negate the possibility, because several more collapses occurred some years later, at the Inverythan crash and the Norwood Junction rail accident in 1891. Thereafter, all cast-iron underbridges on the rail network were eventually replaced by steel structures.

Blue Buffalo Recalls Can and Biscuit Products Due To Tampering By American Nutrition Inc.

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE — Wilton, Connecticut, April 26, 2007- We at the Blue Buffalo Company have just learned that American Nutrition Inc. (ANI), the manufacturer of all our cans and biscuits, has been adding rice protein concentrate to our can formulas without our knowledge and without our approval. This is product tampering, and it apparently has been going on for some time. The can formulas that we developed, and trusted them to produce, never contained any rice protein concentrate. It appears that only an FDA investigation of ANI’s rice protein concentrate supplies forced them to reveal this product tampering to us.
While this activity by ANI is in itself unlawful, the situation is further clouded by the fact that ANI has been receiving rice protein concentrate from Wilber-Ellis, some of which the FDA has determined to be contaminated with melamine.
So while no BLUE or Spa Select canned product has tested positive for the presence of melamine, and there has been no reported illness due to any of our canned products, we simply cannot be sure of what ANI has been including in our formulas. For this reason, we have decided to remove all of our canned and biscuit products from retail distribution. While this may seem to many to be a major over-reaction, as other ANI customers will probably only recall the products that tested positive for melamine, we see this as a matter of integrity.
We founded Blue Buffalo on the principle of providing dogs and cats with the highest quality and most nutritious food, and we will not sell any product that doesn’t meet this standard. And under these circumstances, we cannot say that any products manufactured by ANI measure up.
The obvious question is “how could Blue Buffalo not know that ANI was putting rice protein concentrate into our canned food?” The answer is we trusted them. In business and in life, we all trust our partners to deal with us honestly. When we buy produce from our local grocery store, we are trusting growers, shippers and a series of handlers to have delivered a product that is safe and nutritious for our family. If any one of these parties betrays our trust, contaminated products can make their way to our dinner table.
And while we test for known toxins and contaminants, we don’t test for protein sources, like rice protein concentrate, especially when we did not formulate our products to contain them.
In the end, this all comes down to an issue of integrity, and ANI has not been honest with us and with the pet parents who buy our products. We will not put any product made by ANI on the shelf, and are temporarily withdrawing an important part of our business in order to be true to our pet parents.
We have already started the process of identifying a can and biscuit manufacturer with whom we can build a partnership based on trust. Once we have accomplished this, BLUE and Spa Select cans and BLUE Health Bars will be reintroduced with the high quality and superior nutrition that our brand stands for and that dogs and cats deserve.
We have informed our retail partners and the FDA about this action and will be cooperating with them to complete this recall quickly. The specific product involved includes all “BLUE” brand can dog foods, all “Spa Select” brand can cat foods and all “BLUE Health Bar” treats.
Consumers who have unused or partially used packages of any of these products should return them to their place of purchase for a complete refund.
All “BLUE” dry natural food for dogs and “Spa Select” dry natural foods for cats are not affected by this recall and are safe for consumption. Should consumers have a specific question, they can call the Company at 1-800-919-2833, Monday through Friday, 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. EDT, to receive more information.
