An infomercial for Kevin Trudeau’s Mega Memory System claimed that scientific studies of his system showed that it could help anyone achieve a photographic memory, even people with learning disabilities or low IQ’s. “Kevin Trudeau’s breakthrough techniques were developed while working with blind and mentally handicapped students,” the infomercial said. “Their recall ability increased from 15% to 90% in just 5 days,” it said, and stated that the techniques were “. . . guaranteed to work for you.” In fact, the FTC alleges, the memory system would not enable users to achieve a photographic memory, and the advertising claims were false.

To settle the FTC charges, Kevin Trudeau, who developed and appeared in all the infomercials, including the one for his “Mega Memory System,” will pay 0,000 in consumer redress and will be barred from making false claims for the products in the future.

Q&A: What is the recent product you put into your dishwasher to clean the lines of mineral deposits?

Question by ?Jackie Blue?: What is the recent product you put into your dishwasher to clean the lines of mineral deposits?

I have heard of a recent product on a tv commercial that is recommended you put in your dishwasher to remove lime and calcium deposits. I can’t recall what it is or where to buy it. Anyone know or have any ideas on how to take care of the mineral buildup without calling a repairman? Thanks.

Save your money and use white vinegar. Dump a couple of cups of white vinegar in the bottom of the machine after it’s started filling with hot water. Let it start to “wash” and shut it off for 1/2 hour or so. Then turn it back on and let it complete the cycle.

If you do this on a monthly basis, it’s good, cheap, and keeps your dishwasher working at it’s best.

Q&A: Would you keep using a baby item that was recalled?

consumer product recalls
by USCPSC

Question by Momuvtwinboyzn1babygirl: Would you keep using a baby item that was recalled?

For example…..Bumbo or Fisher Price Rainforest Play yard? The reasoning behind the Bumbo was so stupid…..who would actually put their baby on anything inclined in the Bumbo….that’s ridiculous. My baby loves her Bumbo. Now, I do see the reasoning behind the play yard recall but wonder if babies were put it there that were too big (higher than weight limit), etc. and if the play yard was put together right to begin with. Sometimes those things can be so confusing.

I agree with the bumbo! People are so ridiculous sometimes. The play yard I never had so I am not really sure why that was recalled. To answer your question I would stop using it depending on the reason why it was recalled.

One of the simplest adaptations is to build sturdy buildings out of wood, rather than brick or stone. Wooden buildings can naturally flex more to dampen the oscillations associated with an earthquake, whereas a brick structure would be more prone to crumble.

There are high-tech solutions too, employed in, for example, tall buildings in cities. Large masses with some degree of constrained movement can help dampen the motion of an earthquake. Alternatively or additionally, there may be measures taken to construct building that are partially decoupled from the ground (eg, on rollers), so that if an earthquake occurs, only a fraction of its energy is transferred into the building.

On a related note, one of my favourite examples of construction around tectonic or seismic events is the Alyeska Pipeline in Alaska. Where the pipeline crosses the Denali fault, it’s built on rails, so that if there is any fault offset (such as there was in the 2004 Denali Earthquake), the pipeline will slide and escape serious damage.

Hope that helps!
