Pet Food Recalled Amid Reports Of Pet Deaths
Cats, Dogs Suffered Kidney Failure

POSTED: 9:09 pm CDT March 16, 2007
UPDATED: 9:38 pm CDT March 16, 2007

A major manufacturer of dog and cat food sold under Wal-Mart, Safeway, Kroger and other store brands recalled 60 million containers of wet pet food Friday after reports of kidney failure and deaths.

An unknown number of cats and dogs suffered kidney failure and about 10 died after eating the affected pet food, Menu Foods said in announcing the North American recall. Product testing has not revealed a link explaining the reported cases of illness and death, the company said.

“At this juncture, we’re not 100 percent sure what’s happened,” said Paul Henderson, the company’s president and chief executive officer. However, the recalled products were made using wheat gluten purchased from a new supplier, since dropped for another source, spokeswoman Sarah Tuite said. Wheat gluten is a source of protein.

The recall covers the company’s “cuts and gravy” style food, which consists of chunks of meat in gravy, sold in cans and small foil pouches between Dec. 3 and March 6 throughout the U.S., Canada and Mexico.

The pet food was sold by stores operated by the Kroger Company, Safeway Inc., Wal-Mart Stores Inc. and PetSmart Inc., among others, Henderson said.

Menu Foods did not immediately provide a full list of brand names and lot numbers covered by the recall, saying they would be posted on its Web site — www.menufoods.com/recall — early Saturday. Consumers with questions can call (866) 463-6738.

The company said it manufacturers for 17 of the top 20 North American retailers. It is also a contract manufacturer for the top branded pet food companies, including Procter & Gamble Co.

P&G announced Friday the recall of specific 3 oz., 5.5 oz., 6 oz. and 13.2 oz. canned and 3 oz. and 5.3 oz. foil pouch cat and dog wet food products made by Menu Foods but sold under the Iams and Eukanuba brands. The recalled products bear the code dates of 6339 through 7073 followed by the plant code 4197, P&G said.

Menu Foods’ three U.S. and one Canadian factory produce more than 1 billion containers of wet pet food a year. The recall covers pet food made at company plants in Emporia, Kan., and Pennsauken, N.J., Henderson said.

Henderson said the company received an undisclosed number of owner complaints of vomiting and kidney failure in dogs and cats after they had been fed its products. It has tested its products but not found a cause for the sickness.

“To date, the tests have not indicated any problems with the product,” Henderson said.

The company alerted the Food and Drug Administration, which already has inspectors in one of the two plants, Henderson said. The FDA was working to nail down brand names covered by the recall, agency spokesman Mike Herndon said.

RE: Toy Recalls, Why are North Amercian Corporations & Manufacturers so Ignorant to the CYCLE OF ECONOMICS?

Question by Utopian Friend: RE: Toy Recalls, Why are North Amercian Corporations & Manufacturers so Ignorant to the CYCLE OF ECONOMICS?

TIP: If you eliminate jobs through OUTSOURCING them to places like China, not only is the Safety Standards different to appalling, but these import products are targeting consumers that are the very people you made unemployed by outsourcing! How the heck are these people suppose to buy the very products they once made without the level of income they once enjoyed when they had a job with these corporations?
Logic isn’t their strong suit, but greed is their main motivator. Perhaps these RECALLS are coming back to bite the Corportations in the a**?
SIDE NOTE: The recalls are based on dangerous production from other countries, similar to Import FOOD/ Liquids/ or other personal products that all North Americans consumne. What’s to stop those who wish to Harm Westerners from contaminating any of these imported produce or products? Doesn’t this come under War Safety Strategies the way we responded to in WWII or the Cold War? Are Corporations putting their nations at risk for terrorism in a different form? This may not be just about economics & cost effectiveness.
Thought I’d throw that one out to you to ponder, as our food seems to be in the news a lot lately… EG: Bovine TB in AB. Canada, British bird flu outbreak (H5N1 virus), American E.coli in Spinach last year & many many more!

Question by White Chocolate: What do you think of this consumer affairs complaint?

Lady drives a 2005 Infiniti fx35 with “only” 165,000 miles on it. The transmission has gone bad. She says the transmission could have locked up on her while she was driving and killed somebody. She got trans replaced at AAMCO and sent Infiniti the bill. She says infiniti should replace transmission rather than be sued for millions of dollars. She says “we consumers pay your salaries. your product on these cars should be designed properly for safety issues. I work hard for my money and try to get a good quality car backed by your name. It looks like Infiniti is building cars just for the look and not for its dependant ability.Infiniti should act on their auto problems instead of waiting until someone gets killed before recalling these malfunctions.”

Question by deliciadawn: Has anyone had a recalled Ford product fire and would you be willing to testify in court?

My son and his girlfriend were burned alive, due to the failure of the recalled cruise control switch. My car was NOT RECALLED until 7 months after they were killed. I have filed a wrongful death suit, Ford knew this part was defective since the early 90’s and still let people drive them around with ticking time bombs under the hood. So if you would like to be a witness let me know with a e-mail address.

Question by jimi4950: Poll: Will you have your peanut butter sandwich today?

More recalls and a criminal investigation are the latest news in the salmonella outbreak linked to the Peanut Corporation of America’s processing plant in Blakely, Ga.

More than 400 peanut products have been recalled in the wake of the outbreak. Those items are listed in the FDA’s searchable list of recalled products. That list is expected to keep growing, so FDA officials encourage consumers to check it regularly.

Anyone recall the product (sounds like it could be napkins, but not sure)?
