Lower Bartonsville Covered Bridge collapses into the Williams River in Vermont
This covered bridge built in 1870 could not survive the raging water of the Williams River in Lower Bartonsville village in the town of Rockingham, Windham County, VT. We were hoping all day the water would not reach the top of the abutment but the bridge lost its battle rather gracefully as it floated a bit down stream before breaking into pieces. Our town has set up a fund to rebuild our historic bridge go to www.rockbf.org for more information.

The Accident
It happened on the Midland Railway track between Derby and Chesterfield, on a dark and foggy night of 26 September 1860. With visibility only about 10 yards, the train was proceeding north at only 14 mph. It was a long train, with 27 wagons loaded with salt, two loaded goods vans, engine, tender and brake van. The heavy load was causing some slippage on the rail. Half a mile beyond Ambergate station, the driver suddenly noticed that his rear wheels were no longer on the rails. He shut off steam, stopped the engine and went to investigate. His tender was attached to only two wagons, and they were all off the rails too. There were two more wagons about 10 yards behind, close to Bull bridge, a small viaduct over a local road. The next nine wagons behind were piled in a heap about 25 feet high from the bottom of the road, reaching up to the telegraph wires by the side of the track. The guard in the brake van had been thrown head first against the front panel when the accident occurred, but was not seriously hurt. All the wagons behind the bridge were still on the line.
Investigation
Section of broken girder
When examined by the driver and fireman, they found that one of the cast iron girders had fractured, unusually near to one of the abutments, rather than at the centre of the beam. The track was supported by a pair of identical girders with Barlow rails cut to length laid across the inner flange, with asphalted ballast on top, just below the sleepers. When Captain Henry Whatley Tyler of the Railway Inspectorate examined the fracture surface, he found it rusted over, but the evidence of those who had seen it first, showed just what had happened. The cast iron girder had broken vertically from an enormous defect in the web and flanges, where there was a complete gap between the sides. The girder was completely defective here, but why no one had spotted it before the accident remains a mystery. Tyler suggests that it may have grown from an internal void with time, simply because such a defect would surely have been discovered either by the foundry or the builders. The girder had been installed 23 years before, in 1837, and should have supported a central load of 90 tons if in good condition. The pair of girders should have supported a total load of 360 tons distributed over all the structure, and Tyler stated that the girder was much bigger than was needed for the job. The engine weighed 31 tons and the tender 18 tons. The source of the defect remains unknown, but may have been caused initially by a “cold shut”, where the molten metal does not fuse together during metal casting. It often occurs when two waves of fast cooling cast iron meet, but why it should have occurred only about 10 feet from one end remains unknown. It could have grown with repeated loading from passing traffic, and Tyler thought it lucky that it had failed when a goods train was passing, rather than a passenger train, when casualties would have been inevitable. So it is possible that fatigue had caused the failure by steady growth of a brittle crack from the initial defect.
Implications
Together with the Wooton bridge collapse next year in 1861, there should have been some concern within the railway companies about the number of cast iron girders used as under-bridges on railway lines. Engineers would also have been aware of the problems of cast-iron in railway bridges after the failure of the Dee bridge in 1847. Whether or not such structures were inspected is unknown. Later events seem to negate the possibility, because several more collapses occurred some years later, at the Inverythan crash and the Norwood Junction rail accident in 1891. Thereafter, all cast-iron underbridges on the rail network were eventually replaced by steel structures.

The Minneapolis bridge collapse/ Did they start to clean-up the accident?
Question by Andrew: The Minneapolis bridge collapse/ Did they start to clean-up the accident?
I haven’t heard anything about the bridge collapse lately. How is the progress going?
Best answer:
Answer by Nick H
well, if you watch Seconds from Disaster(National Geographic channel), you would see that they look for victims first, then the investigators take over, and clean up as they investigate. when the bridge is totally cleaned up, the contractors take over, check the soil, check the water yadda yadda yadda and make sure the area is safe to rebuild in. hopefully, the bridge will be done by 2020 they are saying. but i recommend that you watch Seconds from Disaster.

1 3 14 20 Xu, Kunming new airport under construction flyover collapsed in the watering process, according to the General Office of the Kunming city government responsible person, as of 19:30 a total of seven people were killed, 8 seriously injured and 26 slightly injured.
1 6, “Xinhua Perspectives” reporter from the Shanghai “Bridge sese” incident, the total contractor Shanghai Construction Group was informed that the Group decided to persons responsible for this accident to make punishment?? Group Corporation, production and operation of the Department of Manager, Quality Management Director Liu Xun full, basic, general manager of Qin Baohua, general manager Wang Lixiong decoration, decorative Project Manager Bing, who was given a warning and a demerit, and impose a range from 10,000 to 20,000 yuan fine.
From Nanjing’s “Bridge sticky” to Shanghai’s “Bridge sese”, to Kunming, the “collapse bridge collapse” in 2010, nearly a month after New Year’s Day, some local “in the bridge” incident frequently. It questioned the phagocytosis of innocent lives, damage the image of the government of “rubbish” works, why frequent? How they break through a Road regulatory threshold? How to prevent future “problem bridge” incidents?
“Bridge problem” often lead to public questioning is
1 3 New Year’s Day holidays, from Yunnan Construction Engineering Services company supporting the construction of the Kunming airport approach bridge construction in the concrete pouring support sudden collapse of the accident which caused 7 deaths, 26 were slightly injured, eight seriously injured .
Had less than a month, more than “problem bridge” serious incidents.
2009 12 early citizens of Nanjing found that more than a year into operation only Hanzhong Gate Bridge went so far as 55 cracks. Even more bizarre is that the construction units in receipt of the complaint, actually overnight paste the glue will rip. In this play called “The Bridge sticky” in the incident, the responsible person has not been investigated.
Month on the 28th, Henan, Shanghai Suzhou Creek Bridge then be exposed, “Bridge sese” event, so once again the media outcry?? Crack behind the bridge plate decorative lamp posts, actually exposed bags, cement blocks and so a lot of garbage, debris. Bridge engineering expert, Shanghai Municipal Engineering Design Institute has been a senior engineer Zhang Huan said: “I worked in the bridge industry for 47 years, is really unheard of garbage filling!”
The short term “problem bridge” to happen frequently, to remind people of a major bridge safety incidents in recent years, the painful memories?? August 13, 2007, Hunan Fenghuang Tuo River bridge on the river embankment collapse, resulting in 64 deaths , 22 people were injured; May 17, 2009, Hongqi Road, Zhuzhou City viaduct collapsed, 9 people were killed and 16 injured … …
“Bridge problem” occurred frequently, the lesson profound. Comprehensive questioned by some experts and users in general that is rooted in regulatory authorities, “the board aloft, gently falling”: perfunctory prior acceptance of construction units, the competent department understatement penalty in the post.
Kunming “bridge collapse collapsed” after the incident, construction and Fang Yunnan Construction Engineering Services Company Engineer GAN Yong told the media that the incident “does not rule out the weather.” Some one said: “This rush to self-liberation argument, reminiscent of the ‘hide and seek’ event.”
“Bridge of the main structure intact, no security risk”?? Nanjing, the “Bridge sticky” event and Shanghai “bridge sese” incident soon as he was exposed, the two urban construction department at the first time this has happened. Many users think that this “attitude of the first” too lightly, is not convincing.
Urban construction departments led by the municipal government facilities, accident investigation, has also been criticized by users?? Own people check their own people is itself a lack of transparency, and then hastily concluded that only affect the credibility of government departments, similar investigations should be an independent body and social forces, to the public an explanation.
