PRODUCT: “Prenatal Vitamins with Folic Acid” by Chase Laboratories under the Geneva Generics label, containing 100 tablets of vitamins with iron.

PROBLEM: Lack of child-resistant closure means that a child could accidentally swallow these vitamins with iron. Just four or five tablets if consumed by a child at one time can cause serious illness or death.

WHAT TO DO: Immediately return the “Prenatal Vitamins with Folic Acid” (100-tablet bottles) to the store where purchased for a refund of the purchase price.

WASHINGTON, DC – In cooperation with the U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC), Chase Laboratories, Inc. of Newark, NJ is voluntarily recalling their 100 tablet bottles of “Prenatal Vitamins with Folic Acid” packaged under the Geneva Generics label because they are not packaged with child-resistant closures. The product intended for pregnant or lactating women, contains 60 milligrams of iron per tablet. The iron contained in just four or five tablets, if consumed by a child at one time, can cause serious illness or death.

The recalled Prenatal Vitamins contain 100 tablets with a total of 6,000 milligrams (mg) of iron. The package is not child-resistant as required by the Poison Prevention Packaging Act. The CPSC enforces the requirement that any over-the-counter medication or dietary supplement which contains more than 250 mg of iron in a single package must be supplied with child- resistant packaging. Chase Laboratories reported the packaging problem and their initiation of the recall to CPSC under the reporting requirements of Section 15(b) of the Consumer Product Safety Act, 15 U.S.C. {2064(b).

Consumers should immediately return the product to the store where purchased for a refund of the purchase price.

Since the product’s introduction in 1990, approximately 70,000 bottles of Prenatal Vitamins with Folic Acid packaged under the Geneva Generics Label were distributed in non-child-resistant packaging through 342 retail and wholesale druggists nationwide.

Chase Laboratories, the manufacturer, and Geneva Generics, the private label distributor, instituted the recall of this product because of the potential hazard to children from these tablets due to the lack of child- resistant packaging. Neither of the recalling firms nor the Commission is aware of any poisoning incidents due to this product. Data from the American Association of Poison Control Centers report that 11 children in the United States died in 1991 from ingestion of iron-containing medicines and dietary supplements.

CPSC is announcing this recall as part of its mission to protect the public from unreasonable risks of injury and death associated with consumer products. The Commission’s objective is to reduce the estimated 28.5 million injuries and 21,600 deaths associated each year with the 15,000 different types of consumer products under CPSC’s jurisdiction.

What can YOU do about the pet food recalls?

Question by Jill: What can YOU do about the pet food recalls?

Check your state’s web site and write your Senators demanding they put a stop to ALL food imports from China until the quality of their products can be guaranteed.
Write to the FDA. Write to the White House. If we don’t stand up to this atrocity it will continue.
It’s now in human food… (yes, check your news — pigs fed contaminated food, butchered and sold to humans) how many people will die or become sick before our government does something?
Write your Senators, your state reps., anyone you can find an email address for.
Only wheat gluten importing was suspended, now it’s rice meal (or something like that) that’s contaminated — stop ALL imports!!

Should there/are there laws about selling recalled food?

Question by Beka E: Should there/are there laws about selling recalled food?

With the recent recall of peanut related products, I am left wondering what would happen to a business that continued to sell the contaminated product? Do you think there should be laws with potential fines or jail time for shop owners who continue to sell these products?
In example: there is a small corner store in my town just outside Baltimore City. The shop owner is strange and I doubt he is aware that there are recalls on peanut related products and if he does know about the recall I highly doubt that he would throw away any of his merch. I also don’t think he gets his stuff from a distributor, more like a Costco shopper. I still see peanut butter crackers, sports bars etc… on his shelves. if this makes someone sick they could die. Sol what I want to know is, Is it the consumers responsibility or should the retailer be held responsible for selling recalled product?

A somewhat stupid question about Henna kits?

Question by modelesque: A somewhat stupid question about Henna kits?

Last night I posted a question asking if you can get custom henna designs at a henna place. The kiosk that I know that does henna doesn’t do custom pieces (or so I think, they had pictures of all the designs you can get up). If I were to buy a kit, would I be able to do a custom henna on myself or is it specifically made to use the stencils?
I’nm pretty artistic, if that helps.

Botulism Cases Force Huge Meat Recall

WASHINGTON (July 22) – A Georgia meat processor on Saturday expanded its recall of canned meat products that may be connected to a botulism outbreak.

Castleberry’s Food Co. of Augusta recalled more than 80 types of canned chili, beef stew, corned beef hash and other meat products in addition to the 10 brands it had recalled Thursday.

Cans of chili sauce made at the Castleberry’s plant were found in the homes of an Indiana couple and two children in Texas who had been hospitalized with botulism. All four are expected to survive.

Botulism is a muscle-paralyzing disease caused by a toxin made by a bacterium, Clostridium botulinum. Such bacteria are commonly found in soil.

The Agriculture Department’s Food Safety and Inspection Service said Thursday that an equipment malfunction may have been responsible for the contamination.

On Saturday, FSIS said the malfunctions at the Augusta processing plant may have existed longer than initially estimated.

Castleberry’s, which is owned by Bumble Bee Seafoods LLC and based in San Diego, voluntarily expanded the recall.

Castleberry’s senior vice president Steve Mavity said: “We believe we have isolated the issue to a situation of under-processing on one line of our production facility. As an extra precaution to the recall we announced on Wednesday, we have shut down this line altogether and are recalling all products produced on it.”

Brand names of the recalled products include Austex, Best Yet, Big Y, Black Rock, Bloom, Bryan, Bunker Hill, Castleberry’s, Cattle Drive, Firefighters, Food Club, Food Lion, Goldstar, Great Value, Kroger, Lowes, Meijer, Morton House, Paramount, Piggly Wiggly, Prudence, Southern Home, Steak N Shake, Thrifty Maid, Triple Bar and Value Time. The recall also includes four varieties of Natural Balance dog food.

Consumers with questions about the recall may contact Castleberry’s at 1-888-203-8446.
