Which website (in your opinion) has the best design?

Question by David P: Which website (in your opinion) has the best design?

I’m to lazy to think of my own design, and I’m not very creative anyways. Which website have you seen, were you just opened it and said “WOW”. I want a formal layout, so dont say some #$% like disneychannel or something stupid.

Q&A: Do electric treadmills and manual treadmills have the same design?

Question by Confused: Do electric treadmills and manual treadmills have the same design?

I bought a manual treadmill. It has a double-flywheel on the front, which is supposed to make it more stable. However, it had a bent flywheel on the left side, which wobbled and made it go to the right constantly, no matter how much I adjusted the belt on each side. I called the manufacturer…they sent me a new flywheel. Took a week. Except for this time, it was bent on the same side as the first, and also slightly bent on the other. They don’t seem to want to answer for that now, but I’m going to get my money back for this thing, one way or another.

My main question is…do electric treadmills work in a similar way to these manual ones? Obviously, they have a motor and it’s ‘easier’ to walk on them because of that…but how are they designed? Flywheels? Mainly I’m wondering if I have to go through all of this ‘make sure each side of the back and front of the treadmill belt line up exactly’ bs. I have a flawed product and replacement part, for my current manual treadmill.
While the manual treadmill that I have would have adjusted properly had the parts not been bent from the manufacturer. But I also discovered that I don’t like the whole ‘adjust each side of the belt on the front and back’. Are electric treadmills easier than manuals, to adjust? I’m thinking about going electric…I’m convinced this manual treadmill company can’t do jack.

Need some assistance on schooling for Graphic Design?

stupid design
by RTPeat

Question by K.W.: Need some assistance on schooling for Graphic Design?

I have been home-schooled through American School for the past 4 years, and have just recently graduated in April. After seeing alot of people go off to college, it gave me quite a bit of incentive to get some form of a career path moving along.

So at the current moment I work at Best Buy and they have a tuition assistance program I will be looking into. I have not taken any standardized testing due to the fact I was home-schooled, so I will be taking that somewhere if it is needed. I live about an hour outside of Chicago and was for a time looking at either “The Illinois Institute of Art-Chicago or Schaumburg,” or “Westwood College.” I recently started looking at “The School at the Art Institute of Chicago.” So far after doing a bit of digging around I am leaning towards the latter, I obviously wanna get my money’s worth out of it.

I am basically going to ask some really basic questions just so I get an idea from some real people, and not just a web site.

I would like to know and posotive or negatives about any of these schools.?

What the main difference between Visual Communications & Graphic Design is?(Stupid one, I know)

Any good places to start looking for grants?

What the difficulty level is of getting into any of these?

What is the helpfulness of the teachers in these schools?

I am not just some kid fresh out of school that thinks I can design, I have the creative desire, but not the knowledge to create it. I don’t have a HUGE amount of work to put together for a portfolio. I have a bunch of forum signatures I have made, some logos, as well as some work I have done for my Dad, as he is a photographer, so I have some high school senior model work, as well as 1 corporate design, that made in into a European DanFoss magazine as a full page print.

I plan on going to the local college and speaking to a counselor, as well as my sister-in-law’s brother got a degree in graphic design in Ohio, because he needed a scientific degree to go to law school.

I plan on driving it everyday, so the plan if possible is to go to class Mon-Thurs, 9-5ish. I don’t exactly know where I would like to work, a big wish is “The Ant Farm” in L.A. I know the owners son or nephew, so we’ll see what happens there. If I need a letter of reference the best place for me to get that would be my tutor probably, so I would like to know if that would be acceptable to the school.

Thanks for all your help!

First off, a graphic design degree is usually a bachelor of fine arts, not a bachelor of science. Schools like Westwood offer programs called graphic design that are really computer design for people who have no real art skills. Graphic design is a field which has been to some extent mislabeled in recent years, and due to the influx of colleges like Westwood that advertise on TV and make it seem like graphic design is a great and lucrative career, there can be more designers than there are jobs. It really does depend on what type of design you want to do, but if you don’t have an art background at all you can get into school, but won’t do as well.

I don’t know much about The Ant Farm, but design in general can be pretty competitive, especially in certain venues and locations. And pretty much any potential employer will be more interested in a portfolio and schooling than a reference letter and who you may know. Also, if you plan to go to downtown Chicago from suburbia, give serious consideration to the Metra train to get there and back. It is way faster and cheaper, and if you’ve ever had to park downtown you know what I mean.

Q&A: Why do people want to teach intelligent design in schools?

Question by Chris K: Why do people want to teach intelligent design in schools?

so, I just watched most of Ben Stein’s documentary: “Expelled: No Intelligence Allowed”. Basically, the only clips of people who were for the theory of evolution were something like this:”intelligent design is stupid! Why would you ever believe something as stupid as that?” Ok, intelligent design is not a scientific theory. For one, it is not falsifiable. How could I possibly even try to prove you wrong? If you can show me an elephant fossil that dated to the Precambrian era, I might be a little bit more skeptical about the theory of evolution. Two, an intelligent designer is NOT the most parsimonious explanation for the origins of life on Earth. Yes, I know, cells are very complicated. However, I find it a much simpler explanation that life arose through something like the RNA world hypothesis that I do that the first cell was created by some kind of supreme being. I’m sorry, but I just gotta vent a little after seeing something like that. Don’t get it confused, intelligent design is not science, and it would be a real dis-service to kids to teach it in schools.

How do we test ID:

Here is a brief overview of the scientific case for ID:

==========================

Most Christians I know don’t want biblical creationism taught in science classes (they would butcher it, and then there’s the argument about all the other creation stories being taught). What we want is for microbes-to-man evolution to be taught with all its warts—in most states, they are not even allowed to present evidence that would put evolution in a poor light. And we want Intelligent Design to at least be mentioned (with teachers free to discuss it without fear of being sacked). Unlike alchemy, storks bringing babies, a flat earth, etc., a significant percentage of the (tax paying) population believes in ID (which is agnostic regarding the source of design and encompasses every “creation” story).

See the New World Encyclopedia entry on Intelligent Design:
http://www.newworldencyclopedia.org/entry/Intelligent_design

Good science teaching should include controversies. But, whenever you mention this kind of stuff, Darwinists jump from their trees and start behaving as if someone had stolen their bananas. Apparently, academic freedom is for other subjects. At the moment, educators are in the interesting position of not teaching students, but instead conditioning them to recite the “correct” answers without a second thought to other possible explanations. Today’s science education does not sufficiently emphasize inquiry-based learning.

What are the Darwinists afraid of? A little critical analysis never hurt anyone who had the evidence on their side. The Darwinists worship their idol but don’t listen to him. He said, “A fair result can be obtained only by fully stating and balancing the facts and arguments on both sides of each question…” (Charles Darwin, Origin of Species).

Evolutionists typically claim that the evidence for modern Darwinism is “overwhelming.” But they act as if they know the evidence is so shaky that the slightest whiff of open discussion will topple the theory. If high school students are capable of understanding the arguments and evidence for modern evolutionary theory, then they should be able to understand (and rationally discuss) scientific criticisms of modern evolutionary theory.

Q&A: Am I to understand Hell is just a design flaw?

Question by TheKitten(evolved): Am I to understand Hell is just a design flaw?

When fundies defend the doctrine of Hell, they ultimately posit that God does not “send” people to Hell. Hell is apparently simply the default option from which God saves. But this God is also the creator of the Universe. Am I to understand he could not think of anything better as the default option than eternal all-encompassing torture?

Question by : Double Major: Fashion Design and something else?

double major in fashion design and a more serious career?
I am still undecided on what to major in but for sure I want to do fashion but I do understand it’s a very competitive major and career that can lead to being poor
should i double major in a more serious career that I am also interested in?

please don’t tell me ‘Oh Fashion Design is dumb. Fashion Design is stupid. You’re gonna end up poor, do something else’ or some crap

should my double majors be connected or does it matter if they’re not?
I am considering double majoring Fashion Design with either Business or Law(well I do understand there’s law school later on so maybe pre-law or political science) or Psych/Sociology

thnxs very muchs!

P.S. I can make clothes and have designed already and I love everything about it. I would like to do this for the rest of my life. My mother had done this too though, sadly, her clothing did not make it up top and we ended up losing a lot of money. She has taught me everything she knows and this is how I know the consequences of failing but I really want to do it still because I just love fashion.

A frequent combination is with a business major. It gives the student background to work in the business side of fashion and in general business as well.
