Question by TheKitten(evolved): Am I to understand Hell is just a design flaw?

When fundies defend the doctrine of Hell, they ultimately posit that God does not “send” people to Hell. Hell is apparently simply the default option from which God saves. But this God is also the creator of the Universe. Am I to understand he could not think of anything better as the default option than eternal all-encompassing torture?

Yep, God couldn’t get it right the first time so he has to “test” us to see if we’re worthy of eternal bliss.

It’s said that God created hell only for Satan, so then there must be some property of hell that makes it automatically suck all wayward souls into itself, and yes thats a big f***ing design flaw.

I would have picked New Jersey. I bet alot more people would “behave” if they thought that instead of heaven, they would go to Jersey when they died…

hell was originally designed as the place of punishment for Satan and his followers.

Satan is pure evil. How ELSE could you punish him?

And God DID think of something better. THAT is Heaven. Heaven is FAR better than Hell! if you are smart, then you will do whatever it take to go to Heaven and stay OUT of Hell.

It’s not a design flaw. God created hell just like God created Satan and God created cancer and AIDS. Your implication that hell is a mistake or even undesirable is just your personal values. Just because humans feel that suffering is not good doesn’t mean that God feels the same way. If God is all-powerful then anything that happens is because he allows it to. If something happens that God doesn’t approve of then God can’t be all-powerful.

It is quite obvious that a loving God would do no such thing. The Dogma of eternal hellfire dishonors God and is Pagan in origin.

“It was Plato who invented the concept of Hell. In his dialogue Gorgias he speaks of the eternal punishments, a thought later adopted by the Christians.” (http://www.in2greece.com/english/historymyth/history/ancient/plato.htm)

Jeremiah 7:29-31 NWT clearly shows God’s opinion of this idea.

“29 “Shear off your uncut hair and throw [it] away, and upon the bare hills raise a dirge, for Jehovah has rejected and will desert the generation with which he is furious. 30 ‘For the sons of Judah have done what is bad in my eyes,’ is the utterance of Jehovah. ‘They have set their disgusting things in the house upon which my name has been called, in order to defile it. 31 And they have built the high places of To?pheth, which is in the valley of the son of Hin?nom, in order to burn their sons and their daughters in the fire, a thing that I had not commanded and that had not come up into my heart.’

How could Jehovah, condemn this practice so strongly and then allow hellfire? How could he condemn his sons and daughters to an eternal fire? The idea is truly sadistic!

“For the living know that they will die, but the dead know nothing, . . . for there is no work or thought or knowledge or wisdom in Sheol, to which you are going.”—Ecclesiastes 9:5, 10, Revised Standard Version.

How do you torment those who have no thoughts or knowledge and if you could what would be the point? It would be like trying to kill someone twice. Might as well “torment” a stone.

What is really scary is that there are still people in this world who have heard the choices and choose hell anyway. After all, no one goes there by accident. They have to choose to go to hell by rejecting God’s will for their lives. Why would any logical person make that choice? The default option is actually heaven. We have to refuse that by refusing God’s will for our lives.

And, if man does not choose hell, hell would serve its only intended purpose: Satan and his angels.
