Design Flaws to Avoid
Design Flaws to Avoid
A good web designer knows there are certain things that you just shouldn’t ever do to a website. Some of them have to do with loading times and others are just faux pas and will turn visitors away from your website. The problem is that many websites out there are outdated and thus display many of these qualities. Also, many websites have been designed by the owner of the company using a free design tool or by an inexperienced amateur who, while they may know some things, isn’t a seasoned web designer with a team of designers behind him or her. Does your website have these basic flaws?
Slow loading graphics or videos. The Internet is where people go to see what they want and when they want. If you are holding them back by posting a high-resolution video of your latest product on your homepage or having intricate logos and banners on every page, visitors will respond by not staying very long. This a web design flaw seen in websites from the previous “web generation.”
Browser Compatibility. Firefox reads different than Internet Explorer reads different than Safari reads different than Google Chrome reads different than Opera reads different than… well you get the point. There are tons of browsers out there and you don’t want to chance leaving some of your viewers out! Do plenty of testing with the biggest browsers and you should be covered if all looks the same with each browser.
Grammar or Spelling Mistakes. It seems simple this is actually something that turns me away from a website almost immediately.
Too Many Colors or Fonts. It’s definitely ok to integrate visual appeal into your web design and pretty fonts and colors are a great way to do it. I’m writing about the website that uses eight fonts on one page, all of them a different color. In my opinion, once you get more than three fonts or colors, you are out of the design theme and that’s when the clashing begins.
There are definitely many other common mistakes that web designers make… maybe we’ll see more in the future here. My suggestion is to look for these in your current website design or consider all of these as you plan for a new website. Q&A: Can someone with legal experience regarding the new Consumer Product Safety Improvement Act answer this?
Question by littlesnugglebuggles: Can someone with legal experience regarding the new Consumer Product Safety Improvement Act answer this?
I am a Work-At-Home-Mom. I make custom baby carriers and sell them. Each of my carriers is one-of-a-kind. I buy my fabric from nationally trusted retailers such as JoAnn Fabrics, etc. I do not buy loads of fabric since I make them on an order-by-order basis (so I can customize for my buyer). How is the CPSIA going to affect me in particular? I am not the one importing the fabric or thread. Shouldn’t my supplies be tested before I buy them? Also, even if they are tested, I usually only buy fabric remnants instead of whole reels. It would be ridiculous for me to ask for certificates for 1 yard of fabric. I feel like this whole thing is going to put me, and a whole bunch of others like me, out of business. How can I possibly afford to have each and every one of my baby carriers tested for lead?
BACKGROUND INFO:
Congress passed a law in August 2008 called the Consumer Product Safety Improvement Act (CPSIA). This law came about because of the numerous recalls of children’s toys in the past two years and specifically the issue of lead in the toys. While I applaud the attempt at making children’s products safer, the law as stands, will actually remove many of the products that we have turned to in place of those made in China.
As of February 10th, 2009, ALL children’s products sold in the United States will need to be certified to be lead free and many products will need additional testing. To be certified, the final product sold needs to have each component on it tested for lead. This sounds wonderful when you think of all of the “Made in China” children’s products that are out there and all of the children’s items that are mass produced (mostly imported). HOWEVER, think of the handcrafted items sold within the US. Think of any children’s item that is a ready made item that has been personalized with a child’s name (it would need to be retested because it is the final sold product that needs to be certified). Think of the children’s items that are sold at craft shows, garage sales, ebay, consignment shops and fundraisers. As of February 10th, it will be illegal to sell any children’s products without certification, no matter when it was produced. Collectible vintage toys and trains? A “banned substance”. You will not be able to donate items for charity because they are a “banned substance” since they are not certified. This applies not only to toys, but all products such as books, shoes, clothing, school supplies, sporting equipment, jewelry, etc. that are possibly intended for children 12 and under.

Write to your congress person and your states senators. Ask them to sponsor a bill exempting domestic craft products from testing provided that the components are lead free.
Then contact everyone you know and know of involved in making and selling domestic craft products and ask them to do the same thing.
If enough people write enough members of congress corrective action will be taken.
Hope this helps

Aircraft Emergency Engine Failure
Aircraft Emergency Engine Failure
We were flying in a twin engine Islander aircraft hoping to skydive from 12,000ft, at about 4,500ft we noticed that we were no longer climbing although we were still heading away from the drop zone; I looked back in the direction of the drop zone and could see some huge black clouds rapidly building. It was not looking that good and we thought we might get a call for a low climb out.
I checked my altimeter and the aircraft was now down to 4,000 ft I spoke to my friend Dave and said I can’t see what the problem is, almost immediately the left hand engine shut down and the pilot shouted get out. This was a real aircraft emergency so you don’t hang around you just get out of the aircraft as quickly as possible.
The door was opened in a couple of seconds followed by people leaving the aircraft in a real hurry as Dave and I went for the door one of the jumpers was blocking the isle calling to the pilot “what’s wrong” the pilot did not answer he just glared angrily and shook his finger pointing to the lame engine.
We almost had to push this guy out of the aircraft; I just could not believe that someone would question an experienced pilots command to leave the aircraft.Dave and I exited last we took a 2 way straight out of the door, with all the excitement of a real aircraft emergency we had no time to look where we were in relation to the drop zone.
When we deployed our parachutes we could see that we had no chance of making it back to the drop zone. I had a quick look around and could see one of the jumpers flying in the opposite direction, I began to question myself as there are two airfields and they both look very similar. I soon realised that he was flying in the wrong direction.
I still could not see any wind socks because of the distance we were away from the drop zone. Suddenly my mind seemed to be playing tricks with me and I began to question the direction for landing, I had checked it earlier in the day but with no wind sock I began to doubt myself.
I tried spitting but it did not give me a clue so I looked around for any signs of smoke, no fires no chimney smoke.I was pretty sure I was heading into wind and I had time and enough altitude to make one final check I went into fairly deep brakes and made some gentle turns, the ground speed went up straight away which confirmed that my original heading was correct.
We all made a safe landing in some fields, and the pilot managed to fly the aircraft safely back to the drop zone. One of the other jumpers came up to me and said I was following you because I could not see which direction to land in, I laughed and told him that I doubted my own judgement as well.
With the use of GPS we have become used to getting a good spot over the drop zone, sometimes we perhaps become a bit complacent in expecting to be over the right spot every time. There are always lessons to be learned to ensure the best chances of reducing injury or worse, so what could we have done to have made this incident safer?
We could not predict this engine failure however we could have made thing safer by just following some simple rules. On this occasion we should have paid more attention to the weather conditions in particular to the wind direction. When you can see a wind sock it is easy to judge the direction for landing however with no reference to wind direction things can become more difficult.
Also when a pilot gives you an order you need to take immediate action, however you should still try to be aware of your surroundings and the buildings and hazards that exist around the drop zone. If you are not familiar with the drop zone always ask for a briefing and look at the photograph of the drop zone so that you are familiar with the area and hazards.
I have a little check that I make on sunny days, I check the position of the sun against the wind direction and providing the sun is not directly overhead you can use it in most situations to get an into wind landing even with a bad spot. http://www.incomepool.com
