Modern Marvels – S11E53 Engineering Disasters 17 Part – (2/3)

Modern Marvels: It’s another chapter of complex, deadly and controversial engineering failures, using 3-D animation, forensic engineering experts, and footage of the actual disasters to understand what went wrong, and how disaster has led to improvement. In Sun Valley, California, weeks of record rain turn a crack in the middle of a street into a 200-foot long sinkhole. Months later, rain led to the Laguna Beach, California landslide, which destroyed 11 homes and caused millions in damage. On May 23, 2004, four people were killed when the roof of the new Terminal 2E at Charles de Gaulle International Airport in Paris collapses. Other disasters: the 1931 crash of Fokker F-10 passenger airplane with coach Knute Rockne aboard; the sinking of the coal ship Marine Electric off the coast of Virginia; and the blinding reflection of the new Walt Disney Concert Hall in Los Angeles. Why do sexy parts have to have poop and pee come out of them?

Question by Dr. Bottom Contributor IV: Why do sexy parts have to have poop and pee come out of them?

Was this a design flaw? Or is poop and pee really sexy, but we have been conditioned to think otherwise?

Because to have good, you also need evil. Poo and pee is the evil side of “sexy parts.”

How does Ken Miller describe the evolutionary development of the eye?

design flaws
by Chris Devers

Question by Selena: How does Ken Miller describe the evolutionary development of the eye?

Could someone help me with this?
Thanks,

Why do proponents of Intelligent Design use the eye to refute the theory of evolution?
How does Ken Miller describe the evolutionary development of the eye?
How does he use “design flaws” such as the blind spot in the retina as evidence for evolution?

Here is Ken Miller’s essay.

It’s actually very short (6 very short pages) … and the part on the blind spot is on p. 5.

Q&A: Is there building code on where the central AC compressors should be installed?

Question by TfC_137: Is there building code on where the central AC compressors should be installed?

Our new construction home is scheduled to close next month., but the location of the AC compressors is really annoying. The compressors were right on one edge of our extented patio at first. I think that is a design flaw I had not expected. Other houses don’t have our issues since our house is flipped. I expressed my concern to the builder on the safety (kids will play on the patio)and noise issues. They said it was impossible to move to the other side at the current stage. However they did move a little bit to allow a seperation (one foot, with some plants put there). I really appreciate their gesture. But is that really what can be done? Is is possible that the current location violates some building code? How to find out if that is the case?

Best answer:

Answer by glenn
With the pipes and electrical box, I would bet it is very expensive to move at this stage. Building code is different in every city. Your city might have something about this but I can’t imagine that they would.

What are some good engineering websites?

Question by wtfwasthat?!: What are some good engineering websites?

Are engineers out there that routinely check certain websites? With the latest news on engineering companies, news, etc. The more sites the better. Thank you!

There are many professional societies specifically for engineers and anyone working in specific areas or industries. IEEE, International Electrical and Electronic Engineering, is the largest engineering society in the world and covers a very diverse range of technologies, from power generation and transmission to semicondutors to automotive electronics and everything in between. ASM Intl (fka American Society for Metals) is for professionals in metals and materials industries, primarily metals but also polymers and covers extractive metallurgy thru to failure analysis, tons of technical information on alloy chemistry, mechanical/physical properties/corrosion, applications from aerospace to medical devices. and many others… SME, Society for Manufacturing Engineers. ASQ, American Society for Quality. AWS, American Welding Society.

Q&A: Why the American govt is taking so long to bring New Orleans back to pre Katrina days?

Question by Roshan A: Why the American govt is taking so long to bring New Orleans back to pre Katrina days?

I have recently read in Time magazine that it is due to the fact that
the city is situated below sea level and another Katrina could wipe out the city and the Govt is concentrating more on relocating its people is it true?

Best answer:

Answer by pilar
it is true that new orleans is below sea level, but if they were so worried about people’s welfare, why are they relocating the poor, and bringing the rich in.

Blue team 1

On October 9 – 10, 2012, the Center hosted a workshop on Lifetime Community Districts, gathering both professionals and people with disabilities to talk about community design with all ages and abilities in mind. These videos are of the two groups of people with disabilities who went on a “walkabout” in a Bloomington neighborhood to spot the design flaws that would keep people from fully utilizing the neighborhood. Their observations are keen and enlightening.

Modern Marvels: Chaos in Guadalajara, Mexico, when the city streets explode; an airplane crash outside of Paris that ranks as one of the worst in history; two mining dams in Italy collapse engulfing a village in a tidal wave of sludge; a generation of children in a small Texas town are entombed in the rubble of their school; an oil tanker runs aground off the coast of England and introduces the world to the devastation of the first super spill… Engineering Disasters 16 delves into the shocking chain of events leading up to each of these horrific catastrophes and examines resulting technological improvements designed to prevent similar tragedies in the future. Why are the overflow holes in a bath not big enough to cope with the taps on full blast?

design faults
by asmythie

Question by johnstonemac: Why are the overflow holes in a bath not big enough to cope with the taps on full blast?

I’ve never done it-I just thought this must be a design fault.
I’m a bit thick.

the overflow drain works on gravity ( it’s realy a vent for the drain) but your fawcet is under pressure. if you hooked the fawcet directly to the drain it would flow fine.but it isn’t so it don’t. just the way it is. good question, you are thinking.

“The Feds are Responsible”

www.brasschecktv.com Amazingly Bush actually finally admitted that the levees in New Orleans were and are a FEDERAL responsibility. That means their failure was a federal responsibility too which means the federal government is responsible for restoring New Orleans to its pre-levee failure state. Or course, that’s not happening Video Director Editor : Steve Belovarich Soundtrack / Audio Engineer : Bret Malley
