Stop signs are octagons
Every other warning is a circle, triangle or rectangle. Why does Stop get eight sides?

Feature. The shape says Stop even from behind or under snow.
The octagon is a shape found on no other regular road sign, so it identifies itself by outline alone. That helps when the front is covered in snow or you are looking at the back of one.
