About Fault or Feature?

Everyday objects are full of odd details. Some are mistakes we have lived with for a century. Many are quiet solutions to a problem nobody remembers. This is a game about telling the difference.

How a card is made

Each of the 38 cards starts with a real, odd detail of a product, interface, sign, vehicle or building. We find out why it is there from a standard, a manufacturer, a museum, a patent or a reputable publication, and we link it on the card. If the reason is disputed, we say that.

A feature was designed on purpose to solve a problem. A fault is a leftover, an accident or a compromise that stayed. Many popular explanations are myths, such as the QWERTY story or the “blood groove” on a sword; those cards say so plainly.

The daily five

Each day five cards are picked, the same five for every player. Your score, your streak and your share text are made in your own browser. The vote tallies are shared: anonymous counts of how everyone voted, shown after you have voted. There are no accounts and no advertising or analytics scripts.

Pictures

The illustrations are drawn for the site. They are simple pictograms of the objects, with the odd detail picked out.
