Feature. It was made for a pocket watch.
Levi Strauss & Co. says the small pocket was meant to hold a pocket watch, a common possession in the late 1800s. The oldest waist overalls in its archive, from 1879, already have it. The watch went out of fashion; the pocket stayed.
