Question by Colt45: What is the story behind the design of the Confederate flag?

I’ve been searching the web trying to find information about what the symbolism is behind the design of the confederate flag. Who designed it? Why did they choose the colors? What do they mean? What do the stars represent? What does the “x” represent? Any info would be greatly appreciated. Thanks!

The “X” flag you are familiar with is actually not the first flag of the Confederacy. The first flag was much like the US flag at the time only with three stripes (2 red, 1 white) and fewer stars in the blue field. The problem was that when the wind wasn’t blowing the limp flag looked at lot like the American flag in use at the time. That made the fighting a little confusing (especially since some confederates still wore blue uniforms early on in the war). Thus the Confederates designed a more distinguishable battle flag which became the “X” design we now commonly associate with the Confederacy.
