Is it altruism if the US gov’t helps victims of Katrina on their feet by restoring the public infrastructure?

Question by heeltap: Is it altruism if the US gov’t helps victims of Katrina on their feet by restoring the public infrastructure?

The above is the headline Q. This is the full-version Q: Is it altruism if the US gov’t helps victims of Katrina back on their feet by restoring the needed public infrastructure of the towns, cities ,counties, & parishes of LA, MS & AL? The people whose lives were impacted by Katrina & Rita & who were forced to leave their homes & businesses, want to go home but many can’t until the gov’t commits to & begins the effort to restore in earnest the public services necessary for people to commit to living temporarily in FEMA trailers while their homes are rebuilt. Public services from water to electricity to garbage/debris removal, police enforcement, public transportation, public housing, medical facilities, & education facilities that were all damaged or destroyed by Katrina & the Levee failures, are the necessary supporting infrastructure of daily life in any city. How can the gov’t at all levels, Federal,State & Local, across the Gulf Coast think they can pretend otherwise. TWH 08282006
Wikipedia gives this definition for the word: “Altruism is an ethical doctrine that holds that individuals have an ethical obligation to help, serve, or benefit others, if necessary at the sacrifice of self interest. Auguste Comte’s version of altruism calls for living for the sake of others. One who holds to either of these ethics is known as an “altruist.”

The ethical doctrine of altruism has also been called the ethic of altruism, moralistic altruism, and ethical altruism.

It is not altruistic of the government for the people by the people…paid for by your tax dollars. The task of rebuilding is going to take up to ten years and the people need thier homes rebuilt today. The damage is far to extensive, to fix in such a short time.

Q&A: Re: Mattel Toys – How can we retain our faith in a company who has so blatantly let their customers down?!?

consumer product recalls
by Public Citizen

Question by bpgagirl22: Re: Mattel Toys – How can we retain our faith in a company who has so blatantly let their customers down?!?

Robert Eckert, chairman & CEO of Mattel, warned @ a news conference last month that there may be more recalls of tainted toys as the company steps up its investigations into its Chinese factories & retests products. Still, the latest action could be another blow to Mattel, which had cultivated an image of tightly controlling production in China. The Consumer Product Safety Comm. also said yesterday that it was considering a possible investigation of whether Mattel notified authorities as quickly as it should have in connection with the Aug. 14 recall. With more than 80 % of toys sold worldwide made in China, toy sellers are nervous that shoppers will shy away from their products during this year’s critical holiday season. Last month, Mattel vowed that it would tighten its controls at its factories in China. Ther is no point in believing these mnc’s anymore… all they need is money.. Its better to focuss on developing countries and companies based from it than believe a well established mnc.

Is there a class action lawsuit against Chrystler because of their cars’ theft design flaws?

Question by Steve J: Is there a class action lawsuit against Chrystler because of their cars’ theft design flaws?

My car has been stolen twice. They get in with a screw driver, break the PLASTIC steering column, and drive away using a stick. Every CHRYSTLER has this flaw. Even the new ‘300’s. they have done nothing to fix this problem. My friend works with troubled youth and he even over heard them talking about how they can drive away with a chrystler with only a stick. these kids aren’t even 16 yet. this is a serious design flaw that they still haven’t corrected.

Did Honda ever correct their flaws, like starting one up with a filed down Chrysler key, or the ease of pulling back on the frame less window, NO
What about the early GM column that can be broken apart and started w/ a screwdriver, NO
Sorry I think you can’t fault a manufacturer for not designing a car that cannot be stolen 100% of the time.
BTW I understand that even if you can get the steering wheel unlocked, if the transmitter is not active then the theft module will not allow the engine to stay running, so I think your off on this one.

Is it true that Menu Foods confirmed their recall by feeding the product to live dogs?

Question by stcroixalta: Is it true that Menu Foods confirmed their recall by feeding the product to live dogs?

I heard that after the recall hit the press, they fed the various dog foods to a number of dogs and something like 7 out of the 10 died, so they “confirmed” that the food should be taken off the shelf. Is that really true? If so, is anyone (i.e. PETA) making this public or making an issue of it? I find it almost too cruel to believe, especially that they would allow the public to know this info.

Answer by Lori K
It sounds like an internet rumor. I’m sure you can contact Menu Foods (a Canadian company) and ask them.
