What are your thoughts on the pet food recall? Are your pets safe?
Question by LM: What are your thoughts on the pet food recall? Are your pets safe?
I was a bit concerned over the recent recall on pet food products. I do buy some of the brands listed, and was glad to find out our cans did not have the same expiration dates as the ones listed on the recall notice. Whew, that was a relief.
Is there a process the food manufacturer follows such as testing their products to ensure their are no contaminants.

Our pets are safe thank goodness! Our dogs eat dry dog food (3 year old beagle and 10 week old boxer puppy). I think it is horrible that pets are getting sick and even dying because of this. It is uncalled for.

Is it safe to buy food from Amazon?
Question by Blah.: Is it safe to buy food from Amazon?
I want to buy some pumpikin puree. They only sell it during the Halloween-Christmas time and I really want to make some food that involves pumpkin. Would it be safe to buy Holiday type food from Amazon? How do they get a hold of it? Could it be expired stuff?
Best answer:
Answer by cactusgene
Yes it is safe to buy food from Amazon. Since your pumpkin puree is in a can, it generally has an expiration date about 2 years out. But even if the expiration date has passed the food is still good if it was stored properly (in a cold dry place.) I keep mine in a cabinet in the garage as I have no basement. And no, Amazon will not sell you stuff that has already expired. But here is what the USDA has to say on this subject.:
What do can codes mean?
Cans must exhibit a packing code to enable tracking of the product in interstate commerce. This enables manufacturers to rotate their stock as well as to locate their products in the event of a recall.
These codes, which appear as a series of letters and/or numbers, might refer to the date or time of manufacture. They aren’t meant for the consumer to interpret as “use-by” dates. There is no book or Web site that tells how to translate the codes into dates.
Cans may also display “open” or calendar dates. Usually these are “best if used by” dates for peak quality.
In general, high-acid canned foods such as tomatoes, grapefruit and pineapple will retain best quality on the shelf for 12 to 18 months; low-acid canned foods such as meat, poultry, fish and most vegetables will retain best quality on the shelf for 2 to 5 years — if the can remains in good condition and has been stored in a cool, clean, dry place.

Question by brisbeachmom: I am concerned about the pet food recall. I have a dog who has been eating purina puppy chow and its made by?
nestle and some of their wet food has been recalled. Our dog has recently been throwing up a lot and we took her to the vet. She said it was acid reflux and told us to give her pepcid ac. It seems to be really working since she hasn’t thrown up since. But still i worry what if that crap they found in the wet food is in the dry. I think i just wanna switch her to human food but i know its not healthy for her. Any ideas?
She wouldn’t eat pedigree..and they recently expaned the recall and said it was delibeartly put in the food in China.Even some of Petsmarts dog food was recalled. Just makes you cautious what is going in your dogs tummy

All that bad food was supposedly pulled off the shelves weeks ago. Unless you had some stocked up from before then i really doubt that you got a bad batch.
Its good to be concerned though. Myself ive been feeding my dogs Pedigree. They were not part of the recall at all.

Question by Jordan: If a food I ate was recalled over a year ago and I just bought it is it safe?
My dad bought some food; I found out that there was a recall on the same product over a year ago. If this food was in the grocery store as of today, is it safe to eat or does the recall still apply to this (presumably) new product?

It’s a new product. It is safe. If they recalled it they wouldn’t put it back on the shelf. 🙂

If it is was recalled it should be off the shelf. If it is still for sale, its because it has been restocked and is now not part of the recall.

With all the recalls on pet food what human foods can a pet eat?
Question by DuSteDShaDoW: With all the recalls on pet food what human foods can a pet eat?
I was thinking that with all the recalls on pet food, that it may be safer to just cook and feed them foods that I know what is going into it, and not leaving it to a food production company, so what human foods would be safe and provide the necessary nutrition (vitamins and minerals) for a cat?
