Question by KLR: If air waves and water waves are same.. why can’t ship not go fast like an airplane?. Is there a design fault?

If air waves and water waves are same, why can’t ship not go fast like an airplane? Is there a design fault that makes the ship to sink or make scary during heavy storms?

AES Tutorial: Design of High-Performance Balanced Audio Interfaces by Bill Whitlock

High signal-to-noise ratio is an important goal for most audio systems. However, AC power connections unavoidably create ground voltage differences, magnetic fields, and electric fields. Balanced interfaces, in theory, are totally immune to such interference. For 50 years, virtually all audio equipment used transformers at its balanced inputs and outputs. Their high noise rejection was taken for granted and the reason for it all but forgotten. The transformer’s extremely high common-mode impedance—about a thousand times that of its solid-state equivalents—is the reason. Traditional input stages will be discussed and compared. A novel IC that compares favorably to the best transformers are described. Widespread misunderstanding of the meaning of balance as well as the underlying theory has resulted in all-too-common design mistakes in modern equipment and seriously flawed testing methods. Therefore, noise rejection in today’s real-world systems is often inadequate or marginal. Other topics will include tradeoffs in output stage design, effects of non-ideal cables, and the pin 1 problem. Design flaw: why aren’t all laptops manufactured out of metal (steel, aluminium), like the Apple Macbook Pro?

Question by Corruptor Bot ¦ÆЩ±®¬: Design flaw: why aren’t all laptops manufactured out of metal (steel, aluminium), like the Apple Macbook Pro?

Why aren’t all laptops manufactured out of metal (steel, aluminium), like the Apple Macbook Pro?

My father recently purchased an Apple Macbook Pro. Very impressive notebook computer. But what really caught my attention is the fact that it’s made from a single block of genuine aluminium. Thus I just wondered why aren’t most electronic devices and consumer electronic products and their external shells made out of metal? Surely then it will be near-indestructible.

And another flaw I noticed in many mobile phones is that the LCD screen is positioned too close to the actual plastic screen surrounding it. To see what I mean, look at a Samsung D600, and look at the screen from an angle, and you’ll notice there’s a fairly large gap between the plastic screen and the actual LCD inside. This is good. Because without the gap, you can drop the phone and the LCD will crack easily. Many laptops have this same design flaw.

My previous macbook had a plastic case. It worked fine, no problems. My current one is made from aluminum. It’s fine also. A bit thinner than the previous one.

Milling something from a block of aluminum is expensive. The manufacturer has to make tradeoffs between cost and usability, and they all make the tradeoff’s differently. Don’t forget the unit with the aluminum case sells for 00.

Is the theory of Unintelligent Design different from Intelligent Design and Evolution? How is it different?

stupid design
by Aurimas Rimša

Question by Sean: Is the theory of Unintelligent Design different from Intelligent Design and Evolution? How is it different?

Evolution – man evolved from apes/monkeys, whatever

Intelligent Design – we are so complex we require a creator

Unintelligent Design – we’re screwed up – our creator is stupid.

I propose that if we are to teach children an alternative to Evolution, intelligent design, since Evolution has never been proven a fact, that we also teach the alternative theory of unintelligent design, that we are really screwed up people, created by a “stupid creator”.

I propose this as a non-offensive theory that is different from evolution and intelligent design, both of which have never been proven as fact.

What do you think?

Answer by piraterachel
we’re not ALL screwed up, I think. What about those amazing gymnists that seem almost able to fly with their practically perfect bodies? I wouldn’t consider myself screwed up if I could do that stuff. But, that theory might be depressing for some students, and hilarious for the rest of them. And, it might make them feel like they have a liscense to misbehave more if they are a “stupid creation” in their own minds. Cheers Imzarray

How many oil rigs have a similar design flaw to the one that failed in the gulf?

Question by retrovertigo: How many oil rigs have a similar design flaw to the one that failed in the gulf?

Everybody is saying how BP cut corners on that rig…or wellhead equipment. (you have to pardon me, I am not an expert) Does anybody know how many other ones there are?

Best answer:

Answer by Bad Moon Rising
What design flaw?
I think you are confusing wellhead equipment with the rig specifications!
EDIT:
The design of every wellhead is pretty much unique. It depends on a large number of technical factors relating to pipe sizes which vary from well to well. The rig design had very very little to do with the “accident”. It is a complicated series of technical issues that are to blame, but at the end of the day it is/was bad decisions that were the cause of the blowout. The circumstances that led to the problems, although not unique, are rare. They have to do with the position (vertically) of reservoirs of different reservoir pressure, and an inability to cement in “production casing” if you lose “circulation” of the much heavier cement in behind the production casing. Normally this is not a fatal problem, but reliance on faulty backup systems, some which appear to have been known to be faulty (Blowout Preventers).
The rig and even the equipment itself, had very little to do with the problem.
