Question by babyeedoll: How to lighten dark hair naturally at home?

I have naturally dark hair. I am growing out my highlights & going back to my natural color, but want to lighten it a bit. I used to use lemon juice and layout, but not much sun these days. Does the lemon really work to lighten hair? As I recall, it would add red highlights to my dark brown hair. If I put a heat cap on will it activate the lemon properties? Any other natural easy lightening tricks that won’t damage my hair?

Herm,
Well I have naturally blonde hair, but when I’m outside alot, or when I go swimming in a pool, my hair get really light.

Sorry If I didn’t help much ><

Lemon juice will work just as well with the heat from a blow dryer as it does from laying out. You can also do the same trick with a bottle of fresh hydrogen peroxide from the drugstore. There also used to be a product called “Sun In” that would give highlights to your hair by spraying it on and either laying out or using a blow dryer. I’m not sure if that stuff is around any more though. Any of these will give you very subtle, minor lightening.

Highlights that look natural are achieved easier if you comb these things through rather than spray them on.

Also, any lightening you do will cause some damage, so be prepared and get a good conditioner.

I don’t see why you want to lighten your hair, because it is a really good thing to have dark hair. Anyhow, try to get in the sun a few times. Put extra-strong sun-block on though! Spending a sunny day at the beach might help.
