Question by answers4evry1: What is a Car Recall?

I called the dealer, and they asked me for the VIN number to “check” any recall. I gave it to this guy, and he said: There’s no recall.

What does that exactly mean?

A recall is when a car manufacturer finds out after a car has hit the market that a part is unsafe or unreliable (though further testing or reports from dealerships of a large number of failures). What they will do is develop a fix to the problem, replacing or repairing the part that is at fault. They will announce that fix and what years/models of vehicles are affected to the dealerships and owners.

When you bring your car in, they can look up the VIN to see if there are any recalls that need to be performed. Once they are performed, they mark your VIN down as being completed (so that a different dealership won’t re-do the fix later). “No recalls” is a good thing, as it means that there are no known unsafe or unreliable parts on your vehicle, or that any of those recall repairs have already been done.

(Note that in the Wikipedia article below, it refers to general product recalls. With most products, you would simply return the product for a refund, but with cars being so expensive, they will repair just the part the needs to be fixed)

this is when there is a common problem with a certain make and model of car and the company gets enough complaints about it they issue a recall and fix whatever problem it is for free. usually you will recieve a recall notice in the mail telling you about it and you take it to your car dealer…. thats what happened to me and with my 1997 monte carlo about 5 yrs ago.

certain models, year vehicles had repair concerns, when enough of them had the same problem a recall is issued and repairs are done for free, if you’ve paid for a repair and a recall is issued, they will evenv reimburse you the money you spent

Cars will be a recalled if there is a defect, just like any other product. Sometimes it can take years for them to realize there is a defect, and some are recalled right away. For example, in 2008, the 2008 Chrysler Sebring was recalled 7 different times. The dealer will check your VIN as sometimes the recall is only for a certain “batch” of cars.

A recall is basically when the factory finds out that there is a safety issue with a certain model of car. Enough people can complain to the point of where the company will be forced by the NHTSa (National highway safety traffic administration). Sometimes manufacturers recall cars for repairs voluntarily. Like a incorrectly built wiper motor. Usually car companies only make recalls that are a safety issue. If your car is part of this recall. You will be notified via mail of this recall and be asked to schedule an appointment at your local dealer for a free repair.
