How can I contract structural engineering services for a sculpture online and inexpensively?
Question by NixPhenom: How can I contract structural engineering services for a sculpture online and inexpensively?
I need to have the strength of a bent piece of sheet metal analyzed to see the maximum load it can support given some gauge of stainless steel. I would also like some process engineering services to determine the best way to assemble the final sculpture. I would like to know the best and most economical way to contract these services online.

Go here to search the various structural engineering firms:-
https://online.acec.org/acecforum/acecLogin.asp
They ain’t cheap! Some sculptors have hired firms like these, but you need a wealthy sponsor such as the City of New York or whomever.
Or you could get yourself a copy of Solid Works and do your own analysis.
Or you could build a test piece and measure the failure load yourself.
Sculptors and civil engineers are not generally a happy mix. You will have your work cut out for you, as all sculptors do. The ways to stay on the right side of an engineer are as follows:-
1) All financial arrangements must be agreed in advance. Do not show up with no money and ask what to do next!
2) Always follow through immediately on things like returning phone calls, providing information and so forth.
3) Do not change anything once you have asked for an analysis to be performed. If necessary, do another analysis (at extra cost, of course) later.
Good luck – you are going to need it!

what is the work environment like in a graphic design studio?
Question by mcgomery2001: what is the work environment like in a graphic design studio?
I was wondering if the work environment in a graphic design studio is casual. Is a suit and/or tie required, or is jeans and t-shirt acceptable.

Probably somewhere in-between if you are on the creative end. If you are in sales a suit and tie might be appropriate for meetings, and just a shirt and tie on regular days. But even as a creative, if you are new to the workplace, neat, casual slacks like Dockers and a shirt with a collar (polo or casual dress shirt) would be as casual as I would go until more time has passed and you have a better pinpoint on what is acceptable at that particular studio.
Always error on the side of paying MORE attention to the details of your appearance . . . often times it colors what people may think the quality of your work is like . . . until they get to know you better.

Q&A: What major should I choose: Interior Design or International Business?
Question by Alexa: What major should I choose: Interior Design or International Business?
I love the artistic side and the architectural side of interior design. When I walk into a room in any building I see how it can be better and Ive taken a summer workshop at the Art Institute. However, I love to learn about cultures and my dream would be able to travel. I feel like I have a knack for business. I cant do a double major in these, so I must choose one. Thank You!

Neither.
Interior Design is in deep recession and will be for the rest of the decade.
Companies don’t hire “International Businessmen” straight from school. It’s a bogus degree.

What are some responsibilities of an engineer?
Question by Gianna: What are some responsibilities of an engineer?
I’m doing a project called “Geometry in the Workplace” for my geometry class and one of the careers I chose was an engineer. I need to find out how geometry is used in this job and how often it is used. I assume it is used a lot but I don’t know how. I also need to know the responsibilities of this job and what someone who has this job is like and what characteristics they might have. The last thing I need to know is the possibilities of promotion or advancement in this career. Thank you for your help!

Civil Engineerings who specialize in structural Engineering deal with geometry on a day to day basis.
Take a look at this link http://www.yourotherteacher.com/wbDemo/xmamgiq8a7-28948/trusses-frames-machines.html
This is called “statics” which is used to determine if a structure will be static or not. Say if you design a bridge and the “loads” applied will be the cars going across. You want that bridge to be “static” (not moving) or else bad things will happen (it will fail). Here is another link (just skim over it) http://www.civilcraftstructures.com/civil-subjects/3-methods-for-truss-analysis/
Another type of Engineering that uses geometry is Mechanical
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Mechanical_engineering
The responsibilities of an Engineer are tremendous. My teachers always told me a doctor can kill one person with the slip of a scalpel but with a slip of a pencil (messing up calculations when designing say a bridge) could possibly kill lots of people. In Canada once you graduate Engineering you are called a Junior Engineer for 5 years until you can actually become a professional Engineer. Once you become a Professional Engineer you will have a stamp that you approve drawings with. If you don’t look over drawings well and find mistakes and put your stamp on it and something goes wrong with the project its your butt on the line.
Characteristics of an Engineer would be highly skilled in problem solving, mathematics and other courses related to Engineering. They need to have good writing skills to write up specification manuals, reports, analysis’. You also need to be a good speaker to make clear what you are trying to say (most Engineering failures are due to lack of communication).
Promotion – Once you finish being a junior engineering and you write a test to become a professional engineer, then you can get your masters in engineering and the get your PhD in engineering. You can also advance by studying other disciplines of engineering, my father is a civil engineer but he does structural, mechanical, geotechnical. Also if you have an engineering degree is does not mean you need to practice engineering. Some high up managers in companies have an engineering degree.
