Question by 805gabe: Did Japan ever have more advanced cell phones than the US or rest of the world?
I remember when I was younger I would hear people say that the phones in Japan were very advanced. I was recently talking with a study abroad student from Japan and all his products were Apple. Was it a myth that their consumer technology was a lot better than ours ever?

What do you think? Answer below!
yes. In fact, they had color screen phones long before we did.
And searing fast internet speeds before we did (many of us still don’t) — BTW, searing fast internet means download speeds of 12Mbps or more. In Japan you can get up to 160Mbps.
mmmmmmmmhmmmmmhhhhmmmm
Cell phone technology became popular in many countries long before it it gained traction in the US. The reason for that is that in many countries around the world, there was only very limited wired telephone service, and it wasn’t very reliable. So when cell phone technology came along, it was very quickly adopted by the market as a practical alternative to ineffective and inefficient wired service.
I recall visiting Venezuela in 1994 and see widespread use of small, pocketable cell phones. Yes, they were analog phones, and featured the old extendable antenna design, but people were using them! At the same time, very few people in the US had cell phones, and those who did had phones that were large and bulky, and often required a separate battery pack.
I think they did and maybe still do.
PS
A country that has horizontal money makers instead of vertical money makers like we are accustomed to in the western world is liable to come up with no telling what for a cell phone system.
Horizontal money makers may be a myth also but I have been hearing about them since WWII.
Hope this helped.
