Tom Wujec: Build a tower, build a team
Posted by James on December 8, 2011 · 50 Comments

www.ted.com Tom Wujec from Autodesk presents some surprisingly deep research into the “marshmallow problem” — a simple team-building exercise that involves dry spaghetti, one yard of tape and a marshmallow. Who can build the tallest tower with these ingredients? And why does a surprising group always beat the average?TEDTalks is a daily video podcast of the best talks and performances from the TED Conference, where the world’s leading thinkers and doers give the talk of their lives in 18 minutes. b-school students SMH (I am a b-school grad)
Is it just me or are doing these kinds of things dumb and stupid?
I bet a team of software developers would build the highest! Business people are dumb. All these guy did is talk about agile design…nothing new.
I work at a barbershop and frequently bitches come in 5 minutes before we close expecting hair cuts
I’m always concious of what time places close and I leave at that time! Ppl are selfish. btw, what is merting?
I experienced this at work yesterday! It was 5 mins before closing at which I made an announcement that we were closing; this lady and her kids are walking around nonchalantly like snails KNOWING that we were all tired and wanted to go home. People just have no consideration for others.
My stupid husband loves to go to stores and restaurants and hour before they close. I have no idea why, it always seems like he wants to go out to eat or go shopping at exactly 8:00 pm or 10:00pm (when the place closes at 9:00 or 11:00). I sometimes want to divorce him because this upsets me, I hate cashing out at 8:59 or having to eat faster because the food finally came in at 10:30.
God.
when i lived in new jersey i always wet to the ikea in pennsylvania
I work at a certain chain craft store in New Jersey (not AC Whore, the other one), and while we make announcements 20, 15, 10, and 5 minutes to closing, in addition to 2-3 once we’re actually closed, it never fails that people are just walking around browsing at 10 after. SERIOUSLY? Thank you for understanding the bane of existence for a retail slave 😉
I am currently failing my Art Gcse, yep Im from the UK, dont ask how I found you okay??? And when my teachers asks me why I have 3 pages total in my exam book I told her, I spend my time watching JPMETZ. Yeahh, she gave me a detention….
I loled when you asked if i had homework to do because i was just bitchin about finals. i am a dumb the frigg.
No homework, just Justine.
i used to work at a very upscale tiffany’s-type store in new orleans that closed at 9pm. most, if not all of our clientele were fully aware of our hours, yet knew that we had a soft-close policy. it never effing failed. when i worked nights and had somewhere to be (say, a 10pm date or whatever), some bitch would breeze in at 8:55 casually browsing and asking a ton of idiotic questions with no intention of buying a damn thing. so completely inconsiderate.
Why’d you have to remind me about my homework? I was in bliss!!
I used to be an assistant manager at The Body Shop in Manhattan…. the only thing worse than last minute people shopping there… was working as a waiter. We closed at midnight, would have no one come in from 10:30 until 11:55 and then we would ALWAYS get the stupid idiot trying to impress a girl, coming in and ordering well done filet mignon, and chocolate souffle at precisely 5 minutes before closing. IDIOTS THE HELL!!!!!
I always look at the door to make sure I’m not there last minute, and I would try to be out of there at least 5 minutes before they closed, if not earlier. It’s just rude, but people don’t care. I work in fast food, close the store at night by myself, and people sometimes stay and eat inside after we’ve closed and I’ve told them we’re closing. It’s rude, people have lives outside of work and they’ve most likely been there all day and like you said they just want to go home!
psh why should i do homework when watching my leader is more knowledgeable then anything else?
No. When a store is closed, it’s closed. To stick around is the essence of asshatery.
But what I love is when there is a “hard closing” and I get announcements about the time every 3.5 mins. This one coffee house I frequent gives ridiculously timed announcements. Like “excuse me everyone, but Peet’s Coffee will be closing in 73 minutes.”
WTF?
If I knew the place was closing, I’d get out of there as soon as possible because I hate being a bother…
i would not go
Spring Break = No Homework
totally agree!! you make me laugh
funny thing is, I am watching this instead of studying for geography. I’m gonna fail, but not at life because I’m watching you 🙂
TOTALLY AGREE WITH YOU.
Yes Justine I do have homework to do. But I like doing meaningful things. So YES I watch you sit there and talk. And laugh. And then end up ranting like you when I’m pissed. WHAT A ROLE MODEL. 🙂
Awwwwww I grew up in jersey and i remember that IKEA :):):):):):):)
i used to have so much fun
Depends on how close the zombie apocalypse is. I mean, if your presence after closing is going to save my life…
That’s why if you want to be done with customers at 6pm, you list your store as closing at 5:30pm.
A nail tutorial on how to achieve that chipped look…the hell.
