Question by msmomofmany: What your feelings about In Minneapolis bridge collapse?

In Minneapolis bridge collapses, 60 hurt, 9 died, many more body’s still in there cars in water…. Beside being Sad, I’m Mad!, Why wasn’t this bridge replaced with new safer bridge? Why are schools starting here in USA with no Ac or in bad repair? Why are the communities that haven’t been rebuild in new Orleans? or why wasn’t the dams replaced there before they were hit with hurricane Katrina? Why wasn’t there quicker response for the many that didn’t get out in time? Then I think of the billions of dollars that are sent over sea’s for country’s to rebuild their bridges their roads, their dams & building their schools…

How many more would like to see our Government and people running for Government answers to that?

What Is The Case Against The Federal Government ?
The Army Corps of Engineers is a federal government agency.
They designed, built, and maintained several waterways that run through the area in and around New Orleans (NOLA).
These waterways were not designed, built, or maintained correctly.
The Army Corps of Engineers and the federal government knew that the waterways they designed, built, and maintained, were at high risk of failure when a hurricane came.
Although the federal government had the ability
had the ability to fix the problems, it did not.
These waterways failed during and after Katrina and caused flooding of the New Orleans area (NOLA), including New Orleans, New Orleans East, 9th Ward, St. Bernard, Plaquemines, and Jefferson.

it’s really sad, and a testament to this country and its current path. we certainly don’t have our priorities in order.

i heard they just raced to shut down the major freeway intersection in the middle of my city. i’m wondering where that’s leading…

  4. arzauven says:

Yes, I agree that it would be great to see leaders keeping their promises and remembering who voted for them. But more often, they tend to remember who financed their campaigns, and that is usually the very large businesses. Also, many politicians will get on soap boxes for causes simply because they want votes, not because they care. If they truly cared, we would be seeing great changes, instead we see too much of “meet the new boss, same as the old boss”. I believe that some politicians start out with ideals and goals that are for the good of the people. In addition to the issues you have raised, I would add that many veterans have lost their VA healthcare that was promised to them, and that although we don’t have general healthcare for many in this country, it’s disturbing to see the politicians voting in larger healthcare and retirement benefits for themselves. I don’t resent that we help other countries, but it’s disheartening to see that many of our citizens do not have those same benefits. I definitely would like to see leaders being held more accountable for what they neglect to do to help our country’s citizens.

Do you expect the whole world to run smoothly?
I think you have a very naive outlook.
    There is no “Superman”

Currently the USA rates 25th in the world for education, we depend on private companies to donate computers for the class room, Teachers are buying supplies out of pocket for the classroom. All the while congress and the president deme it prudent to cut state education funding scabbling over the cost of a new bridge into washington dc to balance the budget while in the same breath asking for over 60 billion to rebuild schools and infrastructure in Iraq (rated higher then the USA). Who really elected these people? And the president actually touts the infrasture repairs in Iraq as signs of sucess.

If I was a Minnesotan, I would be concerned about the Pawlety administration. Who is his transportation executive? Was there a kickback involved with the construction project? Was someone trying to save money by using inferior labor/materials?

The US a Federal Republic. Many services are a local issue (road transportation, education, etc.).

It seemed like the “money” was there. They was construction on the bridge. It seems like someone did something WRONG.

  8. Brett C says:

God people, give this a rest. It’s not a government problem, a mis appropriation of funds, kickback, etc. THIS IS NOT A PERFECT WORLD!!!!!! Things will happen, it’s not the end times, Bush’s fault, alignment of the stars, psychic predictions, etc. The bridge was inspected on a regular basis and passed. things can happen in between inspections and such. It’s a tragedy, stop trying to blame every one else.

  9. rob5279 says:

    It’s Bush’s fault!

    (just kidding)

  10. cowboydoc says:

It’s called life sweety, the next time a vote comes up for replacing something, they need money for repairs somewhere, if something is amiss and they have to raise taxes, be sure you get in there and vote “Yes” to have your taxes increased.
Instead of asking about the rebuilding on New Orleans, ask where 122 million that was given for the rebuilding went, they can’t even find it. Ask what happen to 50% of the homeowners, some have perfectly good homes, that never came back and no one knows where they are.
Ask why some of these people haven’t been back to start cleaning out thier own homes, why are they waiting for volunteers to do the work?

The dams had nothing to do with Katrina, it was global warming and the rise of the sea water higher then it’s ever been. Have you given donations for this study?

People have to respond to natural disasters, were you one of those, you can be a volunteer you know, these people have familyies, logistics have to be gathered and places have to be set up, they could use your help.

Instead of all this crying, why don’t you ask what you can do to help, instead of asking others what they’re doing? huh!

Instead of asking what your country can do for you, ask what you can do for your country.

  11. Andrew says:

I think your questions, are questions for the people who are incharge of the safety of the bridge. Like you mentioned, there are schools that need repaires. I have no clue, why things are let go without repairing them. I don’t get it. New Orleans is still recovering from hurrican Katrina. I am sure that New Orleans, will be back to normal in a few Years. For that, it will take time.

  12. jake says:

I was watching the news and they showed a black or burned suv on its side and there was a person in the driver seat, and that person wasn’t moving! I feel they should not show such scenes and permit these images to go out over the network! Does anyone else agree with me? This is the presidents fault ,because he in charge of the federal agencies that are supposed to ensure our safety on the highways. And if they aren’t regulating things as they should or if they aren’t providing the necessary funds to keep things together then it’s his fault!

  13. Teeby says:

I’m sad that people need to finger point before we have a solid and factual reason as to why this bridge collapsed. You’re more concerned with pointing fingers than having any concern towards the rescuers, the survivors and victims and their families; those are the people that need our support and thoughts (or prayers) right now.

Also, nobody knows how many people have died as a result of the collapse at this point. Law enforcement is still working on recovering those who are missing and no one knows exactly how many people are missing. The Mississippi river along with remaining unstable pieces of the bridge are making recovery difficult and it will probably take days before the recovery effort is finished.

only 4 people have died! don’t you atch the news!!?

  18. Rob R says:

msmomofmany, I relate to how you feel. I am very angry. Lawmakers of both parties focus on getting themselves paid and getting perks like expense accounts, outlandish retirement benefits, and preferential health care benefits that most of the rest of us cannot imagine. They do not really do much to address the need for repair and retrofit of our roads and bridges. This is not just a recent issue, this has been neglected for decades. I think we may see a turning point. Every time a parent drives their children over a bridge and has the deplorable fear that they may drop, drown, be crushed or trapped in debris for days, the anger is going to magnify to incredible proportions. Sweet and soothing words from lawmakers and the president are not going to work this time.

  19. Nikki says:

I live in Minneapolis, MN and I am so thankful that I wait until rush hour lightens up until I leave because I could’ve been on that bridge. It makes me mad that in 1990 there was word that the bridge would need to be replaced. Why didn’t they do more than patch work? My sister takes that same highway home from her job everyday and I haven’t been able to get a hold of her so it really makes you think that you could lose something in just an instant. Never take anything for granted!

I would also like to add that there were originally 7 said to be dead and the number went down to 4. Many others are trapped in the water in cars and some under debris. The likelihood of those people being alive aren’t good.

I heard Tim Pawlenty give excuses and not hold the state at fault for any of this. There is so much other road work going on in this state like tons of highway work on I-94 towards Fargo, ND. Why do they focus on widening these roads or retaring them instead of fixing important things like bridges handing over large bodies of water?

  20. Nick says:

I feel bad for all that lost their lives and I also hope that the bridges get checked on a frequent basis. But this is what life is about, ups and downs, we just have to move on.

  21. Chris says:

You ask too many questions! The bridge collapsed because it was old and made with substandard materials so the city could save money. Sue the city! It’s the American way!

  22. masterpainter22 says:

Um, something no one seems to have noticed yet…”Reports from Russia’s Institute of Solar-Terrestrial Physics located in Irkutsk are reporting today that their Siberian Solar Radio Telescope (SSRT) detected a ‘massive’ ultra low frequency (ULF) ‘blast’ emanating from Latitude: 45° 00′ North Longitude: 93° 15′ West at the exact moment, and location, of a catastrophic collapse of a nearly 2,000 foot long bridge in Minneapolis, Minnesota. Russian Military reports state that the total collapse of such a massive bridge, and in the absence of evidence linking its destruction to terrorist activity, could only have been accomplished by an acoustic weapon, of which the United States Military is known to possess. These reports further state that one of the United States primary research organizations into acoustic weapons research is Augsburg College, and which is located in Minneapolis, Minnesota, and most importantly less than 1 mile from the Interstate 35W Bridge collapse.” It was a horrible thing that happened, shouldnt this be looked into though????

It’s just another event that proves that if you spend all your money pursuing pointless foreign policy your own infrastructure will collapse under its own weight.
