Question by ghostman: how do I fix an electrical problem with my dome lights in my 97 Chevy Blazer?

I looked on-line for some answers but I still need help. No matter what, the dome lights in my truck will not go off. Engine on or off, doors open or shut, even the dome light switch on or off doesn’t affect it. I thought one of the censors might be bad, but I pulled all of them out. NO GO! The stupid f****** lights are still on! I pulled the bulbs out, for now, to save my battery. I still need to find out how to eliminate this problem. Any Ideas?

Okay.. I had to start with the obvious:

Are all your doors closed (including the hatch?)

Also: The dimmer knob for your dash lights also controls your dome light, so that you can turn it on without opening your door. Make sure it isn’t turned on.

And make sure the dome override light is off….

This will be a long search but look for a bare wire somewhere or a grounding issue. We experienced a similar problem when towing our old boat and trailer. As soon as we disconnected the trailer lights, the dome light went off. Hubby and family friend spent several hours going over the wiring on the trailer and found several places where the wire was rubbed “raw” and grounding out on the frame. They wrapped the wiring in electrical tape and when we got back from the trip, we rewired the trailer.

    Good Luck!

Unplug the headlight combination switch. If your lights go out, I would suspect that you have a faulty combo switch. If they stay on, you have a wire grounded somewhere (the dome lights are switched on/off by the ground wire on the fullsize trucks); so they always have 12V at the bulb.

make sure all doors and hatch are shut. make sure the light adjustment wheel in not all the way up it will turn your lights on also check for the dome over ride button. also even if you leave it on the blazer has a low battery sensor and will turn off all electronics in the vehicle to save enough power to start the car unless you over ride this buy using the key to leave the electrical on.

All your door switches are designed to give your light a ground. You must remove panels to get to switches to disconnect the cannon plug to rule them out. Then that will lead you into the combo switch disconnect, If that don`t help you probably have a bare wire somewhere grounding to the body
