Gewehr 41 (Walther)

The German military establishment during WWII has a reputation for innovation and excellence, which is pretty well deserved. But even they produced some real goose eggs, and the Gewehr 41 is one of them. That the G41 was even remotely successful is a tribute to the creativity of the Walther and Mauser engineering staffs, as the gun was fatally flawed from the start by the conditions put on the design. Primarily at fault was the military insistence that the barrel not have a gas port drilled in it. I’m sure there was some theoretical rationale for this requirement, but it was not a reasonable one. Some of the other restrictions were similarly silly, like the requirement that the gun must be able to operate like a bolt action using the same manual of arms as the K98k, and that there be no moving parts on the top surface of the gun (it is revealing that both Walther and Mauser flat out ignored one or more of these written requirements, despite being German companies). The root of the G41 procurement conditions can only really be a suspicious distrust of self-loading rifles that cropped up in many pre-WWII ordnance departments worldwide. It’s the same stubborn lack of foresight that produced repeating rifles with magazine cutoffs. Anyway, Walther and Mauser both provided sample designs for the G41, and after trialling both, the Walther design was accepted for mass production (the Mauser design was rather more complex and intricate). The designs flaws were quickly realized …

www.usgs.gov This film depicts the realistic outcome of a hypothetical, but plausible, magnitude 7.8 earthquake on the San Andreas fault in Southern CA. From the Creator: www.youtube.com Up-and-coming film director, motion graphics designer and Art Center College of Design alumnus, Theo Alexopoulos, takes you on a visceral journey through the USGS ShakeOut Earthquake Scenario. The film was created by the USGS Multi-Hazards Demonstration Project in cooperation with the Designmatters program at Art Center to depict the physical, social, and economic consequences of the most comprehensive earthquake scenario ever created. The film gives the viewers a sense of what will be happening and inspires them to prepare and mitigate for a faster recovery. The premise underlying the film is that design is a powerful catalyst that can bridge the divide between scientific understanding about damaging quakes, and the ability of the public to feel empowered and to change their behavior in terms of preparedness.

I held one of these a while ago, and I’ll agree they are quite front heavy, they should have put the cocking? handle on the left side also.
A very informative video! ? You should also do one for the G41 (M). Now that is really a oddball german rifle.
The Germans thought a? gas port was less reliable, and far less accurate. Their minds were later changed on the G43.
And? I thought they were smart.
Great video. Thank you? very much. Best regards
The resone they didn’t want a gas port in the barrel is because they thought it would make it less? accurate and not be as reliable
Ridiculously overcomplicated and unsuitable for wartime production. Many small, non-interchangeable parts that could be easily lost in the? field. These locking flaps were also present in the Degtyarov machine gun, I wonder if the Germans tried to copy its mechanism.
Awesome! Really? looking forward to it!
Imagine the world of shit we would have been in if they had worked off the mg42 and skipped these inefficient rifles and come up with the g3 in? 1939 in7.92 of course
Weapon bit? him.
Top notch.?
How do you learn how to take these obscure guns apart (and more importantly put back together)? are there manuals and such? available or is it just trial and error?
Reminds me of the locking system on the DP28/RPD. then again I’ve only seen pictures of them. I? really want to see how the G41(M) works.
is there any reason why they didn’t? want a port in the barrel?
Heeelllooooo over complicated! Cool collectors item? but was to busy for military use.
Cool video. You don’t see these very often. Garand toyed around with this idea on the early “gas trap” Garands before they were adopted by the US military. I’d love to see one of those up close if you guys? ever get to handle one.
Ok, so all those rifles should have their bolts stay open after last round has been fired, right?
Thx for? the answer.
@CRH114 Tension, not? pressure.
I have been collecting? and shooting for almost 40 years and have seen and owned weird stuff but I only saw one G41 and it was really too much money. Thanks for showing the inner workings.
I love your videos, and I read the blog every? day. Please keep up the good work.
It’s very simple. The pressure of the spring under the magazine follower in the G41, G43, SVT 38, and 40. When you pull the bolt back the pressure of the spring holds it open, and when you take the magazine out (like on a G43 or SVT 38 and 40) the? bolt will stay locked back.
What happend to? your thumbs dude???
If you want one of? these, I’m selling mine on gun broker.
A of the few advantages that this rifle could have is accuracy since the gas system starts working when the bullet exits the muzzle.
Another is, that the muzzle also dabbles as a expansion chamber, reducing muzzle blast. I saw a video of a? G41 being fired and the muzzle blast was only a puff of smoke, no fireball.
I wonder about one thing with G41, G43 and SVT40. How is? it with the bolt hold open function on these 3 rifles when last round had been fired? Does the bolt stay opened automatically? Or must the shooter lock it manually?
. Your obsession with me is not natural and there’s something really wrong here END QUOTE … OBSESSION? TRY MOCKING… STAND DOWN YOU FALSE CHRISTIAN.
THATS FUNNY WHEN IT COMES TO YOU;YOU WANT NO ONE TO MISTAKEN YOU FOR WHAT YOU ARE. BUT WHEN IT COMES TO THE BIBLE YOU AND YOUR FELLOW CHRISTIANS SAY WHAT YOU? CZ IF YOU CANT THEN THERE ARE NO FALSE PROPHETS ONLY FALSE CHRISTIANS. SAVVY
LOL…One has to be a prophet in order to be a false prophet. I am not any kind of prophet nor do? I claim to be one. So make sure you know what your saying before you say it. to accuse me of being a false prophet when I’m no prophet at all, doesn’t make much sense.
I cleared all but one comment. If you can’t find it, I don’t know what else to tell you. Maybe you need to refresh your page or? something.
You know, I really am starting to worry about you. Your obsession with me is not natural and there’s something really wrong here. I will keep praying for you that you get healed from this obsession.
Good? advice. END QUOTE…you wouldn’t know? good advise if it bit you in the spirit. STAND DOWN! YOU ARE A FALSE PROPHET.

I have 125 acres in the hills of Santa Barbara California surrounded by BLM land….Would anybody be willing to help create a safe place to live, grow food, shelter, I have? much knowledge but can’t do it alone….Any suggestions from people out there? Any body in LA or San Fransisco with no where to go if the SHTF? We could even go underground.
awesome cheers? man

Great information! Thanks? for sharing
the guy who wanted to move to japan why would you want do that the last earthquake? i heard of was bad also theres alot of earthquakes what are you thinking
Why the hell would you want move to? Japan if you want to get away from earthquakes? The seismic activity in California doesn’t even compare to the seismic activity in Japan not even close. In Japan you can get a Northridge size quake at least every year, and great ones like the one being shown every decade or 2.
My apology if this shows up more than once…for the person who wants to move to Japan, be prepared because it is a very active earthquake? zone!!!
Advice to the person who wants to? move to Japan. You still have to be prepared because Japan is a very highly active earthquake zone!!!
Why do you want to move to Japan???…it is a? very high earthquake zone!!!
amazing video,? who made it?
scary.?
Computer Simulations. They put in data like the magnitude of the earthquake the time of day, estimate of amount of people out that day, building structures, water line locations, stuff like that you know. And the computer does thousands of? simulations and then they get the numbers from that.
How can they know this will happen? ??
You werent alive before? that?
oh no if i’m? in canada now i will die and now i’m alive cuz im in the philippines
Despite buildings collapsing due to actual shaking, I’d imagine fear of future collapse + fire would? drive many people away to places perceived as safer. Also, obviously, not all buildings are residential. Since you’re from the UK and possibly not familiar with this sort of disaster, you haven’t seen the reactions people have had. After the event in Northridge, CA in 1994, public parks became campgrounds for many people. It took LA and surrounding counties months to inspect everything.
i really love? this vid
Ok howcome if only nearly 1500 buildings collapse, there? will be 255000 people homeless, it just doesnt add up?????????
