Of course you don’t need to be gay or straight to do any type of work. But fashion design is so heavily represented by us that straight people (and many gays) will assume that if you’re a fashion designer, you’re probably gay.

For a straight guy it’s actually a great career choice. He’ll be around extraordinarily beautiful women, and without much competition for their affection!

I think it’s a pretty common stereotype stating that all male fashion designers are gay. Although a majority of male fashion designers may be homosexual, it does not mean that all of them are gay. If you need excuses to back up the claims against your friend for being gay, here are some examples of famous heterosexual fashion designers:
Ralph Lauren, Calvin Klein, Tommy Hilfiger, Oscar de la Renta, Christian Lacroix, Roberto Cavalli, Salvatore Ferragamo, Valentino

    Damn stereotype. >_<"

a lot of people watch television and see gay fashion designers and assume that you must be gay if you want to become one. i think that this is a stereotype, a lot of straight men deep down would probably love to become fashion designers but because of the gay stereotype, they choose not to. sometimes people of a conservative disposition fall for this stereotype even more. is your co worker a fashion designer? if so, he probably just wants to follow in her footsteps and/or enjoys the profession.

It is just another one of those stupid stereotypes which is enforced by the media in television shows and by designers that are profiled in reality shows who are on the extreme feminine-scale of gay people. There are a lot of straight fashion designers. It can be a very lucrative career choice. The family’s reaction is just a preconceived behavior that is in response to societal views of personalities and careers. Kind of narrow minded, but to be expected out of the majority of people which makes it a sad situation indeed.

Work is stereotyped between men and womans work, and gay men are stereotyped to do the latter. Fashion design is seen as feminine and girly, and therefore a man choosing to take a career in it ‘must’ be gay, just like a woman who teaches gym in highschool ‘must’ be a lesbian. So many people are put off careers because of stereotypes, it’s immature and ignorant to judge people by what they want to do in life.

    Dude that’s a total Stereotype.
