HP Pavilion DM4 Notebook – Power Button Design Flaw!

HP Pavilion DM4 — Amazing!!! Major design flaw! Power button does not sit flush, so you can turn the power button on and off by exerting pressure on the outside of? the computer lid right above where the power button sits. This may be a major design flaw in the laptop. My computer turns on and off when I carry it in my backpack… Still waiting to hear back from HP on how they plan on fixing this issue, which may be a design issue and not simply isolated to one computer.

Video Rating: 3 / 5

2nd reason I dislike Apple & the Mac : The UI is IMHO wrong. In many ways it has not gotten over its basic design flaws that go all the way back to 1984. And until recently Windows was staying true to its 1985 UI roots. Linux has surpassed both in this area , and unlike both Windows & Mac OS X, it lets its user choose which base UI design they want to use.

    @moizaphenom It’s more irritating for me try to understand what somebody says with a bad english. I’m not a native english speaker, so I wrote that in portuguese. At least I have a good education. I’m not sure if you can say the same.

    @doctor79hx

    not true, it’s a power button design flaw. power button is not flush…

  8. uviduploader says:

    @rajinirulez
    Very little pressure needed. All it needs? is a gentle push to turn it on. It turns on and off in my backpack…

  9. rajinirulez says:

    it wont turn on unless there is alot of force…why would u wanna put lots of force in yur com t begin wit..this is stupid..not really a major flaw for me.

  10. anonymusfirst says:

    queria comprarme una pero veo que fallo y ahora me hace dudar…

  11. doctor79hx says:

    Your laptop turns on in your backpack due to HP Protect Smart. I had this issue. You can access the accelerometer settings in the Control Panel -> HP 3D Drive Guard System. Just click disable and your laptop should remain off with any movements in your back pack. Hope that helps some…..

    a great addition for ppl who are watching porn and need to turn the laptop off in a hurry

  13. tuny1209 says:

    OMG…. awful… thanx god mine doesn’t have that horrible problem… hp obviously has to solve this to you!!!

  14. HeadShot360IN says:

    on my dm4, on the very front of the bottom part in the middle, on the black plastic, it looks likes there is a port or something covered by a cover.

  15. csurgeon says:

    @1manarmy93 Mine just needs a gentle tap, so the whining is warranted. I have to take out the battery every time I put it into my bag.

  16. 1manarmy93 says:

    I tried it on my dm4 1160us…
    it doesn’t easily turn on until you apply a lot of force upon it.. theres no way you can turn it on in your backpack unless you drop your backpack violently with the laptop inside , and magically landing on that certain point on the laptop which turns it on…
    :
    you can easily fix it yourself.. (just get an extra laptop cushion slip and place it in the middle of the laptop)..you just gotta stop whining about the little things and fix it for yourself bud.

    WHAT AGREAT FEATURE (LOL!!!!) just like they say at the edge of your fingure tips, Im sorry to hear that about your dm4 but I must have a good one and one that was made quit recently cus I have no such problem with mine I am totaly satisfied with my dm4 laptop it might have its flaws but what laptop dosnt and if you have had any otherlaptop that dosnt have any flaws then why did you buy the dm4, no one is ever satified, quit your crying and enjoy it..Its a good laptop overall

  19. MHDarilek says:

    I have the exact same laptop, and those little bumper strips that you mentioned are not present on my laptop. Perhaps they realized the flaw and fixed it. The power button is flush on my model..

  20. kevcnj1 says:

    For the record, I also tried this on my old G60-530US which is durable and while the lid on this model is thicker it obviously did not turn the unit on, but when I tried it with the plastic CD cover, it did with some pressure. I think any Laptop will with a lot of pressure if the on/off switch is on the top of the keyboard. What makes the DM4 probably more sensitive is that the top is so thin (due to the new technology)

  21. kevcnj1 says:

    I tried it on my new DM4-1160 and it does not do this. I pressed hard on the top. I notice that these new laptops are so paper thin (but durable) but I did not use too much pressure. I opened it and tried placing a plastic CD cover over the on/off switch and pressed hard, it did turn on. I really had to press hard as my switch is flush. I am thinking it is a just a flaw perhaps with your laptop or you have an older model. There are no strips on mine.

  22. necrovale says:

    Sorry, no connections to HP here. I tired it on a few demo machines at bestbuy and other local stores. For you I recommend you try 2 thin pieces of weather stripping foam on either side of the power button. My gripes with the dm4 have more to do with the fact that the fingerprint reader doesn’t work with Google Chrome and fails occasionally with Firefox.

  23. deroowebas says:

    @necrovale yea it worked ,, thanxs so much πŸ˜€

  24. uviduploader says:

    @necrovale I just got another post from @csurgeon (see below) who’s laptop also has this exact same issue and all it needs is a gentle push to do turn it on. Not sure why you have access to several DM4’s but if you have connections to HP, you should inform them of this. HP does not seem to take this case seriously, and it may be a much larger issue than HP thinks, perhaps even a limited recall.

  25. csurgeon says:

    @uviduploader I have the exact same issue. Very little pressure needed. All it needs is a gentle push to turn it on.

  26. TheShowThatSUX says:

    @MrDemilord Well that is something they finally addressed in Lion OS X 10.7, but depending how it works will just see. Depending how customizable the resume/restore settings are may slow the system down alot when doing alot of things. On my LInux systems, as most Linux apps have done that for years, I often need to tweak those settings on systems that I do to may things on or i get a noticeable lag when it is creating the restore points. Can only read/write so many things to a harddrive at once

  27. MrDemilord says:

    @Rifalltoo at second it doesn’t really restore the window when you restore it that is what theshow also explains and hates about osx.. because it starts from 0.. and doesn’t restore the previous session.. while the process is still running in the background

  28. MrDemilord says:

    @Rifalltoo
    It is at most 2 lines of code to change a action of a button.. I don’t see any stability issues here.. or 5 lines of code to change the position of the buttons of the title bar..
    Linux ain’t crippled and is in many ways in my experience more stable than windows.. so your conclusion doesn’t reach further then yourself

  29. TheShowThatSUX says:

    @Rifalltoo I get what you are saying but that is something I don’t like. The good thing about Linux is it has so many ways to do things that no madder how strange your way is odds are some one has a way to do it just like you want to. All distros should not be Ubuntu. It is great for some but not to the liking of others. Ironically I have noticed alot of Mac people actually love it tweaked like you say. While I hate that UI I could care less if others want to use it. Just dont force me to πŸ™‚

  30. TheShowThatSUX says:

    @Rifalltoo Don’t take this the wrong way but that is kind of the point of customizable. If the program is indicative of a behavior that is not indicative of how your work flow is you change the behavior. If it is not customizable you are forced to change your work flow to use that tool. The tool should augment you not the other way around

  31. Rifalltoo says:

    @MrDemilord Nothing is wrong with customization. However, when you start basing the quality of software by it’s customizability, you end up using crippled shit software. Don’t get me wrong, customizability can be high quality. But sometimes, it’s taken too far.

    I hate big programs taking too long to start up because I closed a window to open a different file. That’s why I hate it when closing the last window quits the whole program.

  32. MrDemilord says:

    @Rifalltoo

    I ment a crippled minize πŸ˜‰ because the program still runs but doesn’t remember anything you did before πŸ˜‰

  33. MrDemilord says:

    @Rifalltoo
    you have to do 3 actions to QUIT a program while in linux and windows its only 1 action..
    and that Apple should make a HOOK for it to change the MAC way to a PC style way.. So it is easier for people to change from pc to mac, or for corporate businesses…
    Give me 1 reason why YOU think it is bad to make a HOOK or a SETTING to change the behavior of OSX menu bar.. or even the behavior of the CLOSE button to QUIT instead of MINIMIZE..

    What is wrong with customization anyway…

  34. Rifalltoo says:

    @TheShowThatSUX Ubuntu can look like a Mac, but it still cannot run Final Cut Pro.

  35. Rifalltoo says:

    @MrDemilord So with a mouse, I go to the very top to close a program or window. How is it any different from moving your cursor all the way to the bottom the right click>close window? Why is it different from going all the way to the top of a screen to close a maximized window or click file>close? The difference is a few pixels and a 2048 resolution doesn’t change that.

    And Apple doesn’t shove anything down my throat. They make things, and I like them. It’s that simple.

  36. MrDemilord says:

    @Rifalltoo I don’t see it as a bad thing working my way… unless you like to work my way and I shove it through your throat like Apple does at you

  37. MrDemilord says:

    @Rifalltoo
    Yes I do but rarely use it… I am a mouse person and prefer using my mouse.. But what is wrong making a HOOK in it to put the menu in the running applications..
    I want to work MY way NOT apple’s way.. πŸ˜‰

  38. Rifalltoo says:

    @MrDemilord do you mean you are incapable of holding command and pressing Q?

  39. MrDemilord says:

    @Rifalltoo
    But if you run a 2048 resolution do you know how much hassle it is to quit a program while i can do it with one click with a windows or linux machine.. you have to go all the way to the top of the screen with your mouse to quite a program… why don’t they add a hook so I can change it myself or add a option to choose I want the possibility to change the behaviour

  45. Maxwinner69 says:

    I hate macs too… but you man need to take care of your self… your portraying your self as a 40 yr old virgin.

  46. Rifalltoo says:

    @TheShowThatSUX Just to say this, aside if Apple does or does not own multitouch, they definitely have the best development for it and have executed it better than any other company I’ve seen.

  47. Rifalltoo says:

    @TheShowThatSUX I don’t compare to Linux because there are too many different Linux systems and linux GUIs, so I only have right to compare to Ubuntu, which has good features from both Macintosh and Windows.

    And I’m saying more than a majority favor windows simply because you can customize some colors and themes rather than actually having the Operating System start with a readable and likable theme. I know I have Mac4Lin on my Ubuntu and I love the theme, because it’s readable and looks good.

  48. Rifalltoo says:

    @TheShowThatSUX As for the lag issue, if your really start experiencing that, you should run some utilities to fix the problem It worked for me. Also helped on flash lag. And that problem is reduced compared to windows since programs run atop unix instead of trying to be ran by the Operating system themselves. If something does start to lag, Force Quit can solve all your problems, and works better than talk manager.

  49. TheShowThatSUX says:

    @Rifalltoo ….Not going to disagree with you on the Win GUI, but cant help but noticed you don’t compare to Linux. Any reason?

    And could explain why you think 100% of people must think alike rather they like it or not (AKA Customization does not make? a computer good)?

  50. TheShowThatSUX says:

    @Rifalltoo As for your what OS suits who not sure I agree but if you ask 10 people you will get 10 answers

    As for the one menu, while I get your point, it is very annoying when the computer starts to lag. In that case if you click the menu before it has switch from one to the other it switch which window you are in back to the one you just switch away from. And that can be very very annoying for power users….
