It’s scary … this bridge collapsed four months after it was built.
Newsreel footage from the Tacoma Narrows Bridge Collpase. She was already known to move up in down in the wind, but in 1940, she began to oscillate due to resonance and would eventually collapse

For the record, another bridge was built in the exact same spot only a couple years later and it’s still there. And just last year a 2nd bridge was built right beside it. Just sayin’.

they designed the length of the bridge in such a way that its natural resonance frequency matched the wind blowing over the bridge. this caused the bridge to shake heavily and eventually fail

I heard once that this bridge did not have enough weight to give it stability. Older, heavy duty standards had been set aside to try something new.

There is a bridge in Russia doing this exact same thing. People want it shut down but the government hasn’t bothered. People figure its just a matter of time before that one goes down too.

Well…it must of fallen because there is sand and you know sand isn’t good and when something is built under sand it moves not because iron or bad engineering also earthquake with sand 😛 narbs

@bronz3321 Actually it was harmonics that caused this. No engineer had ever considered before this event that harmonics would ever be such a destructive force. Now all suspension bridges have a curvature as part of the structure to stop this happening again.
@GSNspain Surprise! Aeroelastic flutter is a form of resonance. So yes, it was actually caused by the natural resonance of the bridge.

@henrilot U r wrong, the reason of the collapse is not resonance. Actually it was an aerodynamically poor design (aeroelastic flutter).
