Lots of people can draw very nicely. They don’t even need to go to college to get better and find (low paying) work.
I think maybe you should look at doing something that not everyone can do, as you are more likely to be able to get a job paying decent money doing that.
I think your dad may be right on this one.
What do you think? Answer below!
Your dad has no right to decide for you. Graphics design is actually a growing field of work. DO you see how big teh internet is? This is how big graphics design is. I myself am a business major, but looking at it you will actually have better opportunities than a business major. you get to works in Movies, websites, TV stations, commercials, Game development And a lot more. the field of graphics designers is unlimited in this day and age. Everything we do is computer based. you will learn alot from that program and you will love it. DO what you passion is. Business wont open up such opportunities for you. because the business field is not CREATIVE. its limited and MAny people are in taht field which makes it hard to find a job in the business field. Graphics designers will have a very creative field you will get to USE your imagination at work. I have two friends in that field and they are DOING great. one of them will be working with Dreamworks after graduation ( this Christmas). and they PAY VERRRYY WELL.
If you’re right-brained, going for business management is stupid – because you don’t have the brain wiring to be good at it. But you’d make a great artist. If you’re left-brained, graphic design is stupid. Either way, if your brain is wired for something other than what you use it for, it’s like someone who’s 4’11” trying to become a pro basketball star.
Go with what you are. If you’re an artist, stick to art. If you’re logical, stick to logic. If you’re in the middle go for what interests you. (You’re going to be dragging yourself to work for about 50 years, every day, so you might as well enjoy what you’ll be doing when you get there.)
As far as “being set”: No one gets rich doing something he’s unfit for and hates doing. When you’re not good at something, all you get good at is finding new jobs.
Anicole, if I were you, I would listen to my heart. A wise man once said that if you love what you do, you don’t have to work a day in your life. If you are passionate about graphic arts and are good at it (very important), then you should pursue a graphic arts degree. Besides, such programs these days equip you with the necessary business intelligence required to succeed in a corporate environment. For more information on graphic design as a career, refer to the website of the U.S. Department of Labor ( http://www.bls.gov/oco/ocos090.htm ). All the best!
